Mt. Spokane tops Shadle Park

Brett Rypien broke a big career record Saturday afternoon, but the Mt. Spokane Wildcats set a team record and gained more time for their football season. The Wildcats rushed for 260 yards and scored the final 28 points of the game to dispatch Rypien’s Shadle Park Highlanders 35-20 in a State 3A quarterfinal at Albi Stadium.

Republic rolls into semis

The stage was set for another Republic-Cusick defensive battle when fate frowned on Cusick. Cusick lost starting quarterback Spirit White to a suspected dislocated elbow early in the second quarter Friday night, opening the door for Republic to turn the State 1B football quarterfinal into an offensive display.

Bears claim first trophy for volleyball

LACEY, Wash. – Central Valley scratched off the last goal on its wish list Saturday night. The Bears earned the first State 4A volleyball trophy in school history by finishing eighth to wrap up the two-day event at Saint Martin’s University.

U-Hi loses in marathon

LACEY, Wash. – University’s drive for the State 4A volleyball semifinals hit a brick wall late Friday night, after every other match had long since ended at Saint Martin’s University. The Titans, leading Curtis 7-4 in the fifth game of a back-and-forth quarterfinal, ran out of gas and points. The Vikings scored the final 11 points of the match for a 25-16, 14-24, 25-23, 22-25, 15-7 marathon victory.

Second-year coaches have Valley volleyball on the rise

Central Valley and University both finished 6-10 in Greater Spokane League volleyball during the 1992 season, a typical showing for the Valley teams of a generation ago. From 1978-99, their overall league records were 126-227 for CV and 104-249 for U-Hi. Most seasons, the teams finished in the lower half of the standings and seldom challenged league powers Shadle Park, Lewis and Clark, Ferris and Mead.

Earlier Tuesday, Kelowna’s Rourke Chartier was named Western Hockey League Player of the Week. Tuesday night, Chartier put his name forward as a candidate for next week’s award.

WHL notes: Chiefs sport decals in honor of Cole Hamblin

The Spokane Chiefs will wear helmet decals with the letters “CH” for the rest of the Western Hockey League season in honor of former defenseman Cole Hamblin, who died of cancer last Wednesday at age 21. Hamblin, a native of St. Adolphe, Manitoba, played 19 games for the Chiefs during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Hamblin also played eight games during 2012-13 for the WHL’s Regina Pats, and 94 games with four teams in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, including 35 last year with the Virden Oil Capitals.

3A volleyball: Tough break hurts Mt. Spokane; Shadle Park also out

Give the Mt. Spokane Wildcats an inch and they might be making a trip of 300 miles. Instead, Mid-Columbia Conference schools Kamiakin and Southridge are headed over the mountains for the State 3A volleyball tournament in Lacey. Mt. Spokane and its Greater Spokane League neighbor, Shadle Park, are staying home, finished with their seasons.

Mt. Spokane beats Kennewick 43-13

Mt. Spokane began Friday’s State 3A football play-in game with a 20-0 lead after barely more than 6 minutes. But probably more important to the Wildcats was the way they closed out the first half at Albi Stadium, after Kennewick whittled their 20-point lead to seven.

When Mt. Spokane’s volleyball team faces an emergency, the call goes out to Karly Cantu. This season, her senior year, Cantu gave up her favorite position, libero, when projected setter Selena Styren tore her anterior cruciate ligament playing club ball.

Washington volleyball: CV wins first district title

Central Valley’s volleyball team achieved two important firsts within a span of six days. Kazlyn Roullier totaled 32 kills, Jade Rockwood had 43 assists and Kara Nitteberg added 28 digs on the day as the Bears won their first District 8 4A volleyball tournament on their home court, tripping up main rival University 3-0 in Saturday’s title match.

Whatever happens at today’s District 8 4A volleyball tournament, one state-caliber team will be eliminated. Greater Spokane League champion Central Valley (23-1-1) hosts today’s tournament, which features a supremely balanced field. Any of the four teams would figure to compete well at next week’s regional and beyond.

Chiefs score late then triumph in shootout

Although he stopped shot after shot sent his way, Garret Hughson knew his Spokane Chiefs faced long odds Wednesday when he skated off the ice with 1 minute, 40 seconds left. But the Chiefs, after pulling their goaltender, used the 6-on-5 advantage to tie the game, force overtime, and ultimately defeat the defending Memorial Cup champion Edmonton Oil Kings 4-3 in a Western Hockey League shootout at the Arena.
