Spokane Chiefs lose in overtime

The Thunderbirds were just getting ready to yank their goaltender Friday night when the Spokane Chiefs gave Seattle even more of an advantage. The Thunderbirds used a late Chiefs penalty to tie the game in regulation and Jared Hauf scored 1 minute, 20 seconds into overtime for a 2-1 Western Hockey League win at the Arena.

Alex Douglas aces in University’s GSL volleyball win

Gonzaga Prep and University were dead-even Thursday night when Alex Douglas went to work. The 6-foot senior setter with a devastating left-handed serve had four of her match-high nine aces during a 10-0 third-game serving run as the host Titans broke away for a 19-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-23 Greater Spokane League volleyball win over G-Prep’s skyscrapers.

Calder Brooks’ reward for driving 18 hours from Canada to Spokane was a trip back to Canada. Brooks laughed about the prospect Thursday at the Arena, about 24 hours after he arrived in Spokane for his introduction to his new Western Hockey League team, the Chiefs.

Shirley Baker has a concise response if anyone asks why 1A Chewelah, which has struggled to hold its own on the court in recent years, has entered the high-powered Linda Sheridan Volleyball Classic for the first time. “If the best teams are competing at a tournament, that’s where we want to go,” Baker said.

WHL notes: Much-traveled John Paddock notches first WHL victory

John Paddock owns more than 700 victories as a head coach in the National Hockey League and American Hockey League, so he easily put his first Western Hockey League win in perspective. “For sure, it means something to you,” Paddock told Greg Harder of the Regina Leader-Post last Friday after his Regina Pats improved to 1-2 with a 7-1 road win over the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Chiefs win home opener over Americans

Garret Hughson deflected the last dangerous Tri-City shot and Don Nachbaur deflected any talk about his 600th career win. Hughson improved to 2-0 as Chiefs starting goaltender and Nachbaur became the fourth coach in Western Hockey League history to record 600 career wins Saturday during a 3-2 win over Tri-City in Spokane’s home opener at the Arena.

Shadle tops CV in 47-33 shootout

Brett Rypien reached a new pinnacle on Thursday night, which doesn’t seem to surprise anybody but him. Rypien threw for 455 yards and six touchdowns, in the process surpassing 10,000 career passing yards, as Shadle Park (3-1) pulled away from stubborn Central Valley (1-3) in the fourth quarter for a 47-33 win at Albi Stadium.
