Crossover Classic volleyball tourney renamed to honor Sheridan

The Crossover Classic is turning 20 years old and 1 year old at the same time. The 64-team tournament, called “the biggest all-high school tournament on the West Coast” by tournament director Stacey Ward, is now known as the Linda Sheridan Volleyball Classic.

They’re calling it The New Age at Mead, but it comes with many of the old successes. “We’re ready to grow and we are going to be so much better,” Mead senior Brianna Evans said Thursday after her seven kills led the Panthers to a 25-11, 25-16, 25-22 Greater Spokane League volleyball win at Mt. Spokane in a well-attended rivalry match between sister schools.

Alberta f lood affects Blazers’ Macklin

When other Western Hockey League players were getting in shape and thinking about the season ahead, Kamloops Blazers forward Aaron Macklin turned his attention to life-and-death matters. Macklin was in his hometown of High River, Alberta, when the Highwood River flooded its banks in late June. Most of Macklin’s family lives in the town of 13,000 south of Calgary, including his grandmother, whose fate wasn’t immediately clear.
