Masterful Eckels mows down Spokane

Ben Eckels and the Hillsboro Hops have followed the same trajectory. Eckels scattered six hits over 8 1/3 innings Monday night to pitch the Hillsboro Hops to their third consecutive victory, 2-1 over the Spokane Indians at Avista Stadium. The Hops lead the season series 6-3.

Indians’ winning streak halted

The Hillsboro Hops are trying to shock the Northwest League’s South Division in much the same way the Spokane Indians have surprised the North Division. The Hops scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning Saturday night to answer the Indians’ ninth-inning rally during a 7-5 Hillsboro victory at Avista Stadium.

Castro’s home runs lifts Indians to win over Volcanoes

Janluis Castro heads to the Northwest League All-Star Game with a modest .243 batting average, but he’s made the most of his 41 hits with the Spokane Indians. Castro’s one-out solo home run to right field in the eighth inning Sunday allowed the Indians to snap a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes that capped a five-game series at Avista Stadium.

Sy’s two-run homer paces Volcanoes

Jeremy Sy understands the joke, although he usually doesn’t listen to it. Salem-Keizer’s opponents, such as the Spokane Indians, like to needle Sy by playing Psy’s “Gangnam Style” when he comes to the plate during Northwest League baseball games. A better song for Sy might be “Bang Them Style.” Sy drove in three runs Friday night, including two with his sixth homer of the season, to guide the Volcanoes to a 5-2 win over Spokane in the middle game of a five-game series at Avista Stadium.

The Spokane Indians will have to shuffle and tweak their roster if they hope to remain in the postseason chase. Chase Johnson and the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes already have a spot locked up in the postseason.

Volcanoes rain on Indians’ parade

The Spokane Indians will have to shuffle and tweak their roster if they hope to remain in the postseason chase. Chase Johnson and the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes already have a spot locked up in the postseason. Johnson (2-1) pitched five innings of four-hit ball on Thursday night and exited before persistent rain hit as the Volcanoes breezed past the hobbled and shorthanded Indians 9-3 at Avista Stadium. The five-game Northwest League series is tied at 1. The Volcanoes lead the season series 4-3.
