Panthers fend off stubborn Tigers

All the yards and the momentum seemed to be in Mead’s favor on Friday night. But as the fourth quarter ticked away at Albi Stadium, the Panthers knew they needed one more thing to put away a stubborn Lewis and Clark team.

Chiefs may need some scoring help

The 2013-14 Spokane Chiefs are perfectly capable of duplicating the solid record posted by the 2012-13 Spokane Chiefs. But if they do, it’s not likely to be by the same method. The Chiefs finished 44-26-2-0 last season with a team that ranked fifth in the 22-team Western Hockey League with 269 goals scored. But five players who accounted for a big chunk of the offense – Brenden Kichton, Blake Gal, Alessio Bertaggia, Dylan Walchuk and Todd Fiddler – are no longer with the team. That leaves coach Don Nachbaur scanning the roster for potential goal-scorers to support Mitch Holmberg (39 goals last season) and Mike Aviani (30).

Liberty spoils NW Christian’s football debut

Liberty had no authentic game film on Northwest Christian, so the Lancers put their focus Friday night on generating offensive balance. Liberty’s plan worked, as junior Match Burnham threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns and sophomore Maxwell Johnson added 122 rushing yards and two scores as the Lancers spoiled the Crusaders’ first football game in history with a 44-7 Northeast 2B win at the old Mead Middle School.

Tri-City powers past Spokane

Preseason games may not count, but that doesn’t mean Spokane Chiefs coach Don Nachbaur ignores the numbers. Nachbaur was well aware that his team gave the Tri-City Americans nine power-play opportunities on Wednesday night during a 2-1 Western Hockey League preseason defeat at the Eastern Washington University Recreation Center.

All in the family: Reddings live, breathe Spokane Braves hockey

Gary Redding fondly recalls running around the old Spokane Coliseum as a young boy, following the progress of the junior hockey team his father founded. “Who would have thought, 40 years later, that I’d be involved with the team, and helping to keep it solid in any way I can?” Redding said.

Theron Taylor had the honor of making Deer Park’s first big defensive play of the season. He barely had time to think about it before he scored the Stags’ first touchdown of the season, on their first offensive play.
