Castaneda Free Throws Get Mead Past Rogers

GSL boys

Ralph Castaneda hit two late free throws as Mead, which needed a thirdquarter rally, held off Rogers for a 65-62 win in a Greater Spokane League boys basketball game at Mead Tuesday night.

Ryan Metcalf had nine points in the first quarter as the Pirates opened a 22-14 lead, which they protected until halftime, going up 41-33.

The Panthers (4-0, 5-2) battled back to take a 51-48 lead entering the fourth quarter. The Pirates (1-4, 3-4) cut it to two after making a free throw and a basket following a technical foul, but Castaneda made his free throws and Adam Morris hit 1 of 2. Jason Smith got the technical for hanging on the rim with Mead up 62-57.

The Panthers made half their 46 shots, but the Pirates hit one more field goal. The difference was Mead hitting 15 of 19 free throws.
