Mary Schilling Spokane

Service for Mary A. Schilling, 84, will be at 5 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Graveside service is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Schilling died Saturday. She was born in Butte, Mont.

She was a Spokane resident for 74 years and worked as a seamstress at Decorators Service.

She was a member of the American Business Women’s Association and Eagles Lodge No. 2.

Her husband, Carlos Schilling, died in 1986.

She is survived by one son, Walter Schilling of Spokane; one daughter, Mary Ann Lochten of Spokane; one sister, Katherine Fendler of Spokane; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Karlis Skrauplis Pullman

Service for Karlis Skrauplis, 85, was held Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pullman. Burial was in Ephrata, Wash.

Mr. Skrauplis, who died Friday, was born in Latvia.

He worked as a tailor in Latvia until World War II, when he was held in a Russian camp until the end of the war. He later lived in Germany and also operated a tailor shop there.

He immigrated to the United States in 1949. In Ephrata he again worked as a tailor. In the early 1970s he moved to Pullman and worked for Myklebust’s and Ken Vogel Clothing stores as a tailor.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Pullman.

He is survived by six nieces and nephews.

Hazel Williams Harrison, Idaho

No service will be held for Hazel Carolyn (Reese) Williams, at her request. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Williams died Monday at home. She was 94.

She was born in Hay Creek, Ore. When she was four, she moved with her family to Lewiston. She attended Lewiston Normal School and took her first teaching job in Genesee, Idaho.

She and her husband lived and worked in Wapato and Yakima, Wash., and California, before they settled in Harrison in 1974.

Her husband, Russell Williams, died in 1984.

She enjoyed travelling, gardening, reading and politics.

She is survived by two sons, Ken Williams of Maui, Hawaii, and Paul Williams of Murrieta, Calif.; two daughters, Laura Kenny of Kingston, Ontario, and Joyce Bissell of Harrison, Idaho; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Leona Walter Shorey Spokane

Graveside service for Leona Walter Shorey, 91, was held Tuesday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Born in Walla Walla, Mrs. Shorey died Monday.

She had lived in Spokane for 25 years and was a homemaker.

Her husband, Ralph, preceded her in death.

She is survived by two sisters, Ruth Devine of Mount Vernon, Wash., and Irene Hayes of Yakima.

Evelyn Kendall Spokane

Memorial service for Evelyn I. Kendall, 80, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Born in Geary, Okla., Mrs. Kendall died Sunday.

She graduated from Sandpoint High School and farmed for more than five years in the Deer Park area. She had also worked as a clerk with the Deer Park auction.

She moved to Spokane in 1992. She was a member of the Deer Park Open Door Congregational Church, Silver Sam Travel Club, American Association of Retired Persons, and Wild Rose Homemakers.

Her husband, Lee, died in 1993.

She is survived by three sons, Warren Kendall of Mead, Neil Kendall of Post Falls, and David Kendall of Dillon, Mont.; one sister, Juanita Huffman of Thompson Falls, Mont.; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Inland Empire Diabetes Association or Union Gospel Mission.

Michael Sweeney Spokane

Memorial service for Michael I. Sweeney, 31, will be at 5 p.m. Friday at the Jesuit Chapel at Gonzaga University. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Born in Spokane, Mr. Sweeney died March 31 at the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center, from lymphoma.

in Los Angeles, where he has lived since 1986.

He graduated from Ferris High School in 1982 and attended Spokane Falls Community College for two years.

He moved to Los Angeles in 1986, where he worked as an office manager at the Groundling Theater in Los Angeles.

He is survived by his parents, Robert and Jeri Sweeney of Spokane; two brothers, William Sweeney of Spokane, and James Sweeney of Los Angeles; two sisters, Julia Sweeney of Los Angeles, and Meg Sweeney of Japan, and his grandmother, Marie Ivers of Yakima.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Robert Fraser Spokane

Memorial service for Robert Russell Fraser, 81, was held Tuesday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Mr. Fraser, who died April 26, was born in Libby, Mont.

He worked in public relations for the Mason Contractors Association in Spokane, and retired in 1992.

He had lived in Spokane for 49 years and served in the Army during World War II.

He was director of promotions for the Mason Contractors Association of America, Spokane Chapter, and a member of affiliates of the Spokane Chapters of the American Institute of Architects and the Structural Engineers Association of Washington.

He was survived by his wife of 57 years, Harriet, and one daughter, Judy Roberts of Edmonds, Wash.

Anita Wise Colville, Wash.

Memorial service for Anita Lagasse Wise, 71, is set for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah.

Mrs. Wise died Saturday.

She was born in Waterville, Maine.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Joan Hermanson of Chewelah; one sister, Susan Carney of Wethersfield, Conn.; one grandson and one granddaughter.

Rebecca Trunkey St. John, Wash.

Memorial service for Rebecca Trunkey, 81, is set for 11 a.m. Thursday at First Methodist Church, St. John. Inurnment will be at St. John Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Trunkey died Monday. She was born near St. John.

She graduated from high school in Colfax and lived with her husband, Douglas Trunkey, in St. John.

She was a member of St. John Rebekah Lodge and numerous St. John card clubs.

She is survived by four sons, Don Trunkey of Oregon City, Ore., Gary Trunkey of Snoqualmie, Wash., Roger Trunkey of Kennewick, and K.B. Trunkey of St. John, Wash.; one daughter, Sandie Healy of Ephrata, Wash.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Rosemarie Cappis Pinehurst, Idaho

Graveside service for Rosemarie E. Cappis, 77, will be at 2 p.m. today at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Cheney Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cappis died Saturday in Kellogg, where she lived in Shoshone Living Center.

Born in St. Joe, Idaho, she was a longtime North Idaho resident.

She had worked in food service.

Her husbands, Floyd Harvey, Sr., and William Cappis, both preceded her in death.

She is survived by two daughters, June Hamp of Pinehurst, Idaho, and Virginia Ash of Cheney; five sons, Fred Dalton and Floyd Harvey Jr., both of Elk City, Idaho, and Gene and Joseph Harvey of Pinehurst, Idaho, and Philip Harvey of Cheney; four brothers; two sisters, and numerous grand and great-grandchildren.

J.J. Brooks Newport, Wash.

Burial of John James “J.J.” Brooks, retired Army lieutenant colonel, will be at Riverside National Cemetery near March Air Force Base in California. No local service will be held.

Mr. Brooks, who died April 20 in Palm Springs, Calif., was born in Miles City, Mont.

He served in the Army for 23 years and worked for the government for 11 years.

Following his retirement in 1979, he spent the summer months in Newport and the winter months in Desert Hot Springs, Calif.

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Brooks; two sons, Dennis Brooks of Birmingham, Ala., and Sean Brooks of Spokane; one daughter, Charlotte Brooks of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Betty Haspedis Spokane

Vigil service for Betty L. Haspedis, 66, is planned for 7 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. George Haspedis as celebrant. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Haspedis, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Saturday.

She graduated from Sacred Heart School of Nursing and worked as a surgical nurse at Sacred Heart Medical Center. She later became the hospital’s risk manager and, for 25 years, was its director of nursing.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Sacred Heart Medical Center Loaned Executive, and Gonzaga University Alumni.

She is survived by two brothers, Walter Haspedis and Rev. George Haspedis, both of Spokane.
