High School Seniors Win National Scholarships

The following high school seniors have won National Merit $2,000 Scholarships:

From Montana: Kalispell: Nicholas Wickersham, Flathead High School.

Missoula: Jeffrey Horwich, Hellgate High School.

Whitefish: Koan Mercer, Whitefish High School.

From Washington:

Clarkston: Anita Phillips, Asotin High School, Asotin.

Greenacres: Kathryn Temple, Central Valley High School, Veradale.

Mead: Jennifer Deniro, St. George’s School, Spokane.

Richland: Rebecca Washenfelder, Hanford Secondary School.

Spokane: Matthew Bachmann, Shadle Park High School; Jerome Hagen, St. George’s School; Paul Stimers, Ferris High School; and John Voight, Mead Senior High School, Mead.

Outstanding faculty and students in Washington State University’s College of Engineering and Architecture were recognized for teaching, research and scholarship at a convocation on the Pullman campus.

Shira Broschat, electrical engineering professor, received the college’s 1995 Teaching Excellence Award for her skill and insight in the field of electromagnetics and electrical engineering and her exceptional teaching and integrated research accomplishments.

Stephen Elgar, electrical engineering and computer science professor, was the college’s 1995 Outstanding Faculty Researcher. His research in signal processing is applied to analysis of ocean waves, for which the Navy has provided more than $2 million in funding over the past several years.

Vicki Ruddick, secretary supervisor for the civil engineering department, was chosen as the college’s Employee of the Year. She was cited for outstanding job performance, teamwork, leadership and inspiration.

Students honored were: Trixie Schroeder, a computer science student from Snohomish, Wash., as the Outstanding Senior of the college. She also delivered the convocation address. Recipients of Outstanding Junior honors were Benjamin Williams, electrical engineering student from Ephrata, Wash., and Jennifer Miller, civil engineering student from Richland.

The University of Idaho GAMM chapter received the Outstanding New Chapter Award at the Northwest Regional Health and Wellness Conference held in Issaquah, Wash. GAMMA stands for Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol. The group’s goal is to persuade students to make responsible decisions regarding alcohol and drugs.
