This Game Worthy Of Trip To West Side

Dave Trimmer And Chris Derrick S Staff writer

Ya shoulda been there.

We know we wish we had been.

Just looking at the score, we knew the game of the week had to be the 49-48 victory of 10th-ranked Rogers of Puyallup over No. 8 Lakes last Friday.

Further investigation provides confirmation.

Drew Miller, the record-breaking Lakes quarterback, completed 26 of 40 passes for 409 yards and five touchdowns but was sacked by Richard Hernandez on the final play of the game when attempting a two-point conversion.

Meanwhile, Rogers quarterback Chad Johnson went 30 of 36 for 366 yards and four touchdowns. The 30 completions tied a South Puget Sound League record established by Miller three weeks earlier.

The game featured 935 yards of total offense.

Miller has five consecutive 300-yard games this year, more than any other Class AAA quarterback has apparently had in a career. There are only 13 300-yard games in Spokane Class AAA history. The 409 yards is 10th all-time in state history for any classification, third in Class AAA behind the 489 of Drew Bledsoe for Walla Walla in 1989 and the 441 of Steve Reopelle of Bethel in 1984.

Miller has 1,816 yards in five games this year, putting him within reach of the 2,913 Mark Rypien put up for Shadle Park in 1979, which is second in state history. Pat Graham of DeSales threw for 4,410 for DeSales in 13 games in 1991.

Sure wish we coulda been there.

Not Rosy in Rosalia

Little has gone right for Rosalia (1-4) since it opened the season with a win over Cusick.

Top running back Brian Maley felt his knee lock up in practice before the Spartans’ third game. Maley needed arthroscopic surgery and has been limited to the defensive work he put in last week.

Maley is expected back this week against LaCrosse-Washtucna, but coach Jim Hereford has been forced to move his RB to QB. Starting quarterback Tysen Blank broke his foot last week and is out for the year.

Dave Finley, who filled in admirably during Maley’s absence in the backfield, was poked in the eye and missed most of last Friday’s Southeast B-8 opener. The week before, Finley had 364 all-purpose yards against St. John-Endicott.

“We haven’t had good luck this year,” Hereford said matter-of-factly.

Not out of the Woods

Kyle Woods, the state’s leading Class AAA running back last year, returned after missing a game because of a groin injury suffered in a physical education class and led Marysville-Pilchuck to a 28-12 victory over Snohomish last Friday.

Woods ran for 166 yards and two TDs on 25 carries, giving him 725 yards and 9 TDs in four games.

Footnote

Joe Miller, who finished his career at Ferris last year, was overlooked in the GSL career total offense category. Miller, a quarterback, should be No. 7 at 3,115.

Outclassed, so far

Franklin, Garfield and Roosevelt, the three teams that moved up from the Class AA Metro League to play in the Class AAA Olympic League, are having their problems. Franklin is 0-3, 0-5, Garfield is 0-2, 0-4 and Roosevelt is 3-0, 3-2.

Meanwhile, in the Metro, defending state champion O’Dea is 2-0, 0-5 and has outscored opponents 224-0.

Notable

Redmond has four sets of twins on its varsity team….. Adna running back Mike Brown has rushed for 4,945 yards in his career, No. 2 all-time behind Brandon Jumper of Eatonville, who ran for 5,910 from 1984-87. Brown has 71 TDs in his career, five behind Jumper.
