Gooden, Yankees Work Toward A Contract For Next Year, Beyond

Dwight Gooden could be pitching in New York again next season - but with the Yankees, not the Mets.

The Yankees, who acquired former Mets Darryl Strawberry and David Cone this season, reportedly are close to signing Gooden.

Gooden has not pitched in the major leagues since being suspended July 28, 1994, for violating his drug aftercare program. But he has been megotiating with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, according to published reports.

Gooden reportedly will receive a one-year deal with team options for 1997 and 1998.
