Astros will retire Ryan’s number

Nolan Ryan holds or shares more than 50 major league, American League and National League records. Add one more.

The Houston Astros announced they will retire Ryan’s No. 34, making him the first player in major-league history to have his number retired by three teams.

Next month, both the Astros and the Texas Rangers will honor Ryan, who had more strikeouts, more no-hitters and more overall records than anyone else in baseball history.

He saw the No. 30 he wore with the California Angels retired in 1992.

When the Rangers retired his No. 34, he became the fifth person to have his number set aside by two teams, joining Hank Aaron, Casey Stengel, Rod Carew and Rollie Fingers.

Gooden goes Hollywood

Dwight Gooden made the move Thursday from the mound to the movies.

The New York Yankees right-hander signed a deal with “Lean on Me” producer Norman Twain for the exclusive movie rights to his life story.

Gooden was a teenage phenom who rocketed to success in New York with the Mets, won the World Series, then alcohol and cocaine pulled him down.

That’s followed by, in true Hollywood style, an improbable comeback with the Yankees, capped off by a May 14 no-hitter that completed his return to baseball.

Orioles 18, Athletics 5 Oaklad, Calif.

Chris Hoiles hit two homers and Bobby Bonilla homered and drove in five runs, leading Mike Mussina and Baltimore over Oakland.

Rafael Palmeiro and Roberto Alomar also homered and Hoiles went 4 for 5 in the highest-scoring game of the season for the Orioles.
