Berry Good Wheat

Most of us are familiar with wheat in its ground form, as flour. But the whole wheat berry - also called the kernel - is a versatile food in its own right.

L&B Kitchens in Waitsburg, Wash., on a family farm that dates back to 1869, produces packages of plain, precision-cleaned wheat berries (which come with salad and dessert recipes) and a wheat berry chili mix (in mild and regular versions).

Price: Berries, about $4 for 13 ounces, or $6 for 26 ounces; chili mix, about $4 for 8 ounces, or $5 for 16 ounces.

Available: The Apple Shop in Spokane and McGlade’s Treemendous Fruit & Cider in Green Bluff (reopens in April).
