Teach Kids To Fish

Fishing

A few good men and women are being sought by the Washington Fish and Wildlife Department to teach basic fishing skills to youngsters.

Volunteer fishing instructors should either be experienced anglers or skilled teachers, said Jim Byrd, department angler education program manager. Although fishing experience is helpful, materials are provided that allows teachers who are not anglers to educate kids about fish and fishing, he said.

Background checks are conducted on potential instructors since the program involves working with young people.

The program is funded by federal excise taxes on fishing equipment which are distributed to state fish and wildlife agencies.
