Newsprint Costs Force Changes

We’ve made some changes this week in some of our regular features:

The Aces on Bridge column moved from the Classifieds section into IN Life on page 2.

The Crossword Puzzler shifted from the Classifieds section onto the IN Life TV page (which, on Wednesdays, appears inside Our Generation).

The Trivia column also is now on the TV page, moving from page 2.

The Non Sequitur comic, which had been on page 2, has been moved to the color comics page in a new format, replacing “Us and Them.”

Three comics, “Beetle Baily,” “Wizard of Id” and “Us and Them,” have been canceled, as have Goren on Bridge and Crossword by Douglas Cooper.

Why all these changes? Rapidly rising newsprint prices have forced us to control the size of the newspaper and look for ways to keep core content.

“We had to make some hard decisions and concluded that one bridge column, one crossword puzzle and a full page of color comics every day represented the best content mix,” said Chris Peck, editor of The Spokesman-Review.

We are monitoring reader reaction to these changes and may tinker with the comics and change the crossword, Peck said.

To comment about the changes, please call our Cityline service and leave a message. A Touch-Tone phone is required. In Eastern Washington, call (509) 458-8800, and once the connection is made, enter category 9890. In North Idaho call (208) 765-8811, category 9890. Cityline is free, but normal charges apply to long-distance calls.
