We Talk Turkey, Dish Some Trivia

Rick Bonino Food Editor

For your holiday edification, some turkey trivia, with all the trimmings:

Only male turkeys gobble, reports the National Turkey Federation; female turkeys click.

Roasted turkey was the first meal astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin ate on the moon.

A poll for Honeysuckle White showed Westerners are least likely to prefer white turkey meat (53 percent, compared to 63 percent nationally).

In the same survey, 10 percent of Democrats - but only 6 percent of Republicans - said a male family member cooked the bird.

Callers to the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line last year included a confused Floridian who asked if suntan lotion could be used to baste turkey, a Minnesotan who wondered whether a turkey would stay frozen strapped to a luggage rack and a Texas couple who requested a recipe for cooking turkey inside a pillowcase (they had one, but lost it).

Finally, according to the spoilsports at Living Fit magazine, a traditional Thanksgiving menu (including appetizers) adds up to 1,778 calories and 77 fat grams. Not counting the Coppertone, that is.

Remains of the day

Sick of soup and sandwiches, and wondering what to do with all those turkey day leftovers? On Friday, operators will be on hand at the Campbell’s Leftover Hotline (1-888-453-3868) to offer advice between 5 a.m. and 5 p.m. At other times, through Sunday, you can listen to recorded recipes or have them faxed to you.

It’s what’s happening

If you’d prefer something spicier, Que Pasa? Chili Co. in Coeur d’Alene, a purveyor of fiery food items from hot sauces to beef jerky to jelly beans, is hosting a grand opening celebration Friday at its “new” location, 1124 Sherman, Suite 800 (actually, they’ve been there since February, but who’s counting?)

Stop by for specialty food tastings (habanero peanut cookies, anyone?), drawings for free hot sauces and more. Product samples are always available; hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, with Sundays being added for the Christmas rush. Call (208) 666-9177 for information.

Trade agreement

Then again, maybe you should just stay home and start worrying about your Christmas baking.
