Tnt Ending Year First In Prime Time
Turner Network Television will finish 1997 as the year’s most-watched channel on cable in prime time, while the 24-hour crown goes to Nickelodeon, according to Nielsen figures released Wednesday.
Though the cable ratings year doesn’t end until Sunday, TNT, thanks to strong performances from its original movies and pro-football games, has an unbeatable lead over runner-up USA Network.
For the year, TNT averaged 1,606,000 homes in prime time, up 11 percent over 1996. USA Network averaged 1,425,000 homes for the year, up 6 percent over the prior year. And No. 3 Nickelodeon averaged 1,331,000 homes, up 10 percent over last year.
The top three were followed in prime time by TBS, with 1,304,000 homes, down 2 percent; ESPN, with 1,089,000, down 2 percent; Lifetime, 1,041,000, up 6 percent; A&E, 923,000 homes, up 11 percent; Discovery, 839,000 homes, up 7 percent; Family Channel, 741,000 homes, up 1 percent; and CNN, 632,000 homes, up 9 percent.
