Tips For Picking, Storing Melons

The Arizona Republic

Melons, as with all fruits, achieve their peak flavor when ripe. Store-bought melons should be symmetrical and the blossom end should give slightly under pressure.

Melons are overripe if they’re lumpy and/or have soft spots. Winter melons are underripe if they’re hard. To help them ripen, store in a paper bag.

Whole melons last for up to a week stored at room temperature.

Cut watermelon should be covered with plastic wrap and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two days.
