Boxed Meals Work Great For Camping Trips
Here’s a sampling of foods available at most supermarkets that work well on camping or backpacking trips:
Hamburger/Tuna Helper, and other boxed pasta dishes complete with seasoning/cheese packages (such as Kraft Macaroni and Cheese). Be inventive mix with cheeses or canned vegetables, soups or meats. If recipes call for milk, use powdered milk with water.
Rice-A-Roni. Ditto.
Boxed frosting/cake/brownie mixes (Jiffy brand).
These are small and you only add water. The frosting is great for those graham crackers left over from s’mores, or even on saltines.
Canned meat - chicken, turkey, ham, clams, tuna or shrimp (even Spam and Spam Light!) Mix with beans, pasta or rice.
Dehydrated fruits - try dried cranberries. Use in your cake mix.
Jiffy Pop. It’s a little bulky to carry in, but worth the effort.
Dried potatoes. Doctored with herbs and spices (try garlic, basil), and cheese or margarine, these are great, even for breakfast (make potato pancakes).
Jell-O instant pudding. Works with powdered milk and water. Shake and put it in the stream to chill.
Pre-sweetened Kool-Aid. If you have to disinfect your water, this helps mask the taste, especially for kids.
