Max Wadsworth Cataldo, Idaho

Memorial service for Max E. Wadsworth, 81, will be Saturday at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Mr. Wadsworth, who was born in Garfield, Wash., died Monday.

He was raised in North Dakota and returned to Garfield as a teenager, later finishing his education in Plummer, Idaho.

Mr. Wadsworth moved to Kellogg in the 1940s and worked for ASARCO Mining Co.

He was a member of the Salmon River Trio and also had worked in construction of Grand Coulee Dam.

He retired from mining in 1980 and was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marjorie; four sons, Lyle Wadsworth of Oregon, Marvin Wadsworth of St. Maries, Charles Wadsworth of New Guinea and Dan Wadsworth of Lewiston; two sisters, Verna Meredith of Post Falls and Coleen Carmichael of Bismarck, N.D.; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Ethel Sisson Spokane

Service for Ethel B. Sisson, 93, is planned for 11 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Sisson, a 62-year Spokane resident, died Sunday.

She was born in Moscow, Idaho, grew up in Avon, Idaho, and graduated from high school in Moscow.

In 1935 Mrs. Sisson came to Spokane, where she worked as a legal secretary.

She was a member of Fourth Memorial Church and was active in its Sunday school program. She and her husband served on the missions commission at the church.

Her husband of 57 years, Burton Sisson, died in 1994.

Survivors include a grandson, Larry Greenwood of San Diego, and two great-grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fourth Memorial Church Building Fund.

Ray Barley Jr. Blanchard, Idaho

Graveside service for Ray Lewis Barley Jr. will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Blanchard Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash. is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Barley, 27, died Sunday at home.

He was born in rural Kootenai County.

He had lifetime physical disabilities and was dependent on his family for care.

Survivors include his mother, Betty Ann Barley of Blanchard; three sisters, Raydene Pratt, Rozanne Little and Ronita Sherry; and a brother, Randy Bosch.

Helen Morlan Spokane

Service for Helen D. Morlan, 79, will be at 11 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Morlan, who died Saturday, was born in Sedan, Kan., and had lived in Spokane for more than 60 years. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Garvin Morlan, died in 1995. Survivors include two sons, David and Dusty Morlan, both of Spokane; four daughters, LaVina Michels, Lois O’Brien, Ellen Spicer and Debra Seldel, all of Spokane; two brothers, Elba Baltzell of Carlsbad, N.M., and Neil Baltzell of Hays, Kan.; two sisters, Minifee Runyan of Hays and Pauline Hilton of Wichita, Kan.; 20 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Arthur Kathman Spokane

Funeral Mass for Arthur Eugene Kathman, 52, will be at 9 a.m. today at St. Paschal Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kathman, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Sunday.

He was a West Valley High School graduate and was a patrolman for the Spokane Police Department for 23 years.

He was a member of the International Foot Printer Association and served on the supervisory committee at the Spokane Law Enforcement Credit Union.

Mr. Kathman is survived by a daughter, Christine Hotelling of Spokane; two sons, Andrew and James Kathman, both of Spokane; a sister, Theresa Potts of LaMoure, N.D.; and five grandchildren.

Julia Serrano Minich Smelterville, Idaho

Memorial for Julia R. Serrano Minich, 61, was held Tuesday at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Minich, who was born in Chicago, died Sunday.

She moved to the Silver Valley in 1970 from Lead, S.D., and had worked for Shoshone Medical Center in Kellogg.

Mrs. Minich was a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, John Serrano in 1972 and Thomas Minich in 1992. Survivors include two daughters, Loretta Turbak and LeTicia Serrano, both of Smelterville; four sons, John of Kettle Falls, Wash., Arthur of California, Phillip of Texas and David of Coeur d’Alene; a brother, Christopher Rubio of Florida; and 13 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Kidney Center in Spokane.

Margaret Engelen Sandpoint

Service for Margaret Louise Engelen, 82, will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Coffelt’s Moon Chapel in Sandpoint. Coffelt Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Engelen, who was born in South Dakota, died Saturday.

She had lived in South Dakota and Oregon before moving to Sandpoint in 1950.

Mrs. Engelen operated the concession stand at the Sandpoint city beach from 1954 to 1959.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Donald. Survivors include three children, Faye Moore of Laclede, Idaho, Carolyn Russell of Oregon and Richard Engelen of Virginia; a sister, Jeanne Naccarato of Priest River; five grandchildren, Dianne, Pamela, Donald, Michael and Christine; and four great-grandchildren.

Verne Scanlan Spokane

Service for Verne R. Scanlan, 79, is planned for 1 p.m. today at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Scanlan, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Sunday.

He was a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School and worked as a men’s buyer for The Crescent department store for more than 35 years and then for Brooks Men’s Store.

Mr. Scanlan was a member of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Virginia (Taylor) Scanlan; a daughter, Diane Scanlan Veltkamp of Seattle; two sisters, Winifred Robinson and Margaret Scanlan, both of Spokane; and a granddaughter.

Angela Kobylus Greenacres

Visitation for Angela F. Kobylus, 20, is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home. burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Miss Kobylus died Saturday at home from cancer.

She was a 1994 graduate of University High School and worked as a sales clerk at J.C. Penney and as a nanny.

She volunteered for the Children’s Miracle Network and for the Deaconess Radiation Oncology Department.

She is survived by her mother, Margaret Kobylus, at home; her father, John Kobylus of Tillamook, Ore.; a sister, Jennifer Kobylus of Spokane; and her grandmother, Eava Dennis of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Children’s Miracle Network or Candlelighters.

Dorothy Ripke Spokane

Private burial for Dorothy M. Ripke, 77, will be held at Spokane Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Riplinger Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Born in Thompson Falls, Mont., Mrs. Ripke died Monday.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Spokane for more than 59 years.

She is survived by her husband, Ernest Ripke; a daughter, Sharon Russell of Spokane; a sister, Dolores Henjum of Spokane; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Valerie Kalina Post Falls

Memorial service for Valerie E. Kalina, 59, will be today at 11 a.m. at the Post Falls Friends Church. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kalina, who was born in Illinois, died Monday. In 1973 she moved to Cataldo and to Post Falls in 1978.

She was a member of the Inland Empire Dressage Association and the Post Falls Friends Church.

Mrs. Kalina was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Vladimir, in 1995. Survivors include a sister, Mildred Petranek of Illinois; a nephew, Thomas Bink of Wisconsin; and several nieces, including Donna Knez of California and Valerie Tracey of Illinois.

Robert Wise Sandpoint

Service for Robert Kent Wise, 47, will be today at 1 p.m. at Coffelt’s Moon Chapel in Sandpoint. Interment will be in Tacoma.

Mr. Wise, who was born in Tacoma, died Thursday.

He graduated from Eastern Washington University and worked for ASARCO Mining Co., and the Reichold Chemical Co. in Tacoma. He retired in 1989 as a result of health concerns.

Mr. Wise moved to the Pack River area near Sandpoint in 1994.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Doris. Survivors include his wife, Margaret; a daughter, Jennifer Wise of Sandpoint; two sons, James and Austin Wise, both of Sandpoint; his father, Robert Wise of Tacoma; and a sister, Nancy Merkle of Tacoma.

Warren Scott Grants Pass, Ore.

Private service was held for Warren Lloyd Scott in Grants Pass.

Mr. Scott, a former Spokane resident, died March 18. He was 48.

He was born in Spokane and attended Ferris High School.

He was involved in motorcycle racing and worked as a motorcycle mechanic in Spokane, Coeur d’Alene and Hayden Lake, Idaho.

He moved from North Idaho to Grants Pass about 15 years ago and worked as a painting contractor.

Mr. Scott is survived by two daughters, April Humphreys and Angel Scott, both of Grants Pass; two sisters, Gloria DeForest of Port Costa, Calif., and Diane Huffman of Littleton, Colo.; his mother and stepfather, Phyllis and Jack Hordemann of Spokane; and his former wife, Barbara Scott of Grants Pass.

William ‘Ray’ Creed Spokane

Service for William “Ray” Creed, 78, is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Cremation will follow.

Mr. Creed, who died Saturday, was born in Spokane.

He lived in Spokane before moving to Seattle, where he worked for Seattle City Light for 37 years. He retired in 1980 and later returned to Spokane.

Mr. Creed was a member of the American Legion and had served as state commander.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie Creed; a son, John Creed of Germantown, Wis.; a daughter, Ralen Waymire of Port Orchard, Wash.; two stepchildren, Lyle Collins of Yakima and Laurel Spencer of Nine Mile Falls; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rogers High School Alumni and Friends Foundation or the American Heart Association of Washington.

Jeanne Haskins Rathdrum, Idaho

Memorial service for R. Jeanne Haskins, 77, is set for 1 p.m. Friday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Haskins, who died Sunday, was born in Spokane and graduated from North Central High School.

She lived in the Spokane area for 25 years before moving to Rathdrum five years ago. She was a homemaker.

She was one of the first female bass players for the Spokane Symphony and was a member of the Rainbow Girls.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Ward Haskins; two daughters, Sandra Gardner of Spokane and Kristine Mitchell of Newman Lake; two sisters, Rae Snodgrass of Burlingame, Calif., and Katherine Bell of Spokane; and four grandchildren.

Warren Kennett Spokane

Service for Warren C. Kennett, 85, will be at 1 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Kennett, who died Saturday, was born in Yakima and raised in Finley, Wash., where he graduated from high school.

He served in the Army during World War II as a combat engineer.

In 1959 he married Betty Samuelson.

Mr. Kennett served as a deputy sheriff for Lincoln County and then worked for a construction company for 16 years. He retired from the Washington State Department of Transportation in 1976.

He was a 32-year Spokane resident and was a member of the Davenport (Wash.) Veterans of Foreign Wars, International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 370 and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. His wife died in 1978.

He is survived by a son, Cooper Kennett of Greenacres; a daughter, Bernice Crow of Spokane; and four grandchildren.

Mae Nickens Spokane

Visitation for Mae S. Nickens, 78, is scheduled from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Memorial service is planned for noon Thursday at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Private burial will precede at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Nickens, who was born in Hingham, Mont., died Monday.

She graduated from Kinman Business University in Spokane and worked as a bookkeeper for Cutbank Refining Co. in Cut Bank, Mont.

During World War II she worked in Los Angeles for an accountant and for Graybar Electric.

She married William Nickens in 1943 in Los Angeles and they moved to Spokane in 1947.

For 13 years Mrs. Nickens worked as a bookkeeper for Dr. A.S. Weiland in Spokane.

She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, was active in Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and made Lutheran World Relief quilts. She was also active in a Spokane Parkinson’s disease support group.

Her husband died in 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonny Nickens of Spokane; a son, Lowell Nickens of Portland; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or Lutheran Hour Ministries.
