Crew Rescued From Fishing Boat

From Staff And Wire Reports

Six crewmen were rescued after their fishing vessel ran aground on the northern tip of the Olympic Peninsula early Saturday morning, the Coast Guard said.

The Viking was located on rocks 80 feet off a beach 2-1/2 miles south of Cape Flattery, the Coast Guard said in a news release.

None of the crewmen was injured.

The captain of the Viking reported that the crewman on watch fell asleep at the helm and was awakened by the grounding, the Coast Guard said.

Rescuers initially tried to get the boat off the rocks by lightening its load but had to resort to a helicopter rescue when the vessel remained stuck. The Viking was also carrying 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel, but only a small amount leaked into the water, producing a light sheen, the Coast Guard Marine Safety Office said.
