Arthur Carstens Spokane

Visitation for Arthur August Carstens, 97, will be from 1 to 1:45 p.m. today at the Reardan (Wash.) Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Funeral will follow at 2 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at the Reardan Community Cemetery. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Carstens, who was born in Reardan, died Saturday.

In 1920 he graduated from Lincoln County High School as valedictorian and later received a bachelor of science degree and a master’s degree in agronomy from Washington State University.

Mr. Carstens moved to the family farm near Reardan in 1925 and married Anna Litzenberger in 1926.

He bought his first tractor in 1928 and farmed for many years, developing techniques to maintain soil fertility and humus levels.

After his retirement, Mr. Carstens devoted many years to the development of a mathematical table of prime numbers.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church and served for many years on the Reardan School Board.

After the death of his wife in 1993, Mr. Carstens moved to Spokane.

Survivors include two sons, George Carstens of Spokane and Arthur Carstens of Olympia; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Ida Stout Olympia

Memorial service for Ida Martha (Beguelin) Stout, 95, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home in Spokane. Private inurnment will be at the Pleasant Prairie Cemetery. Mills and Mills Funeral Directors in Olympia is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Stout, who was born in Morgan, Minn., died last Friday.

She graduated from high school in Minnesota and attended college in Minneapolis.

In 1926 she married Frederic Beguelin in Coeur d’Alene. He died in 1950.

She married Fred Stout in 1952. He died in 1956.

Mrs. Stout was a licensed practical nursed and later worked as an inventory clerk at the Grange Wholesale Supply in Spokane for more than 10 years.

She was a homemaker and a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Amaranth Court 52 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435.

Mrs. Stout moved to Olympia eight years ago.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeannine Harrington of Olympia; a son, Marc Beguelin of Torrence, Calif.; a brother, Norman Rambow of Ritzville, Wash.; a sister, Dorothy Penniman of Spokane; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Clifford Wilbur Spokane

Funeral for Clifford L. Wilbur, 80, will be at 1 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

A 53-year Spokane resident, Mr. Wilbur died Sunday. He was born in Salina, Kan.

He served in the Army as a mess sergeant during World War II and moved to Spokane in 1945.

Mr. Wilbur worked as a baker for Wonder Bread Baking Co. for a short time and was later employed as a purchasing agent for Spokane Metals for 35 years. He retired in 1980.

He was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 690.

His wife of 57 years, Mary, died last May.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Olsen of Spokane; two brothers, Donald Wilbur of Solomon, Kan., and Oscar Wilbur of Mount Vernon, Wash.; two sisters, Frances Beach of Ellensburg and Theresa Nelson of Decono, Colo.; two granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.

Sondra Lema Wasilla, Alaska

Memorial service for Sondra Kay “Sandi” Lema, 51, will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Valley Fourth Memorial Church in Spokane.

Mrs. Lema, who was born in Rathdrum, Idaho, died Dec. 10.

She graduated from business school in California and moved to Spokane in 1983.

Mrs. Lema worked as a bar manager at several lounges in Spokane before moving to Wasilla about nine months ago.

Survivors include a daughter, Tina Cooper; her parents, Onie and Limey Miller; two brothers, Rob Holbert of Post Falls and Jerry Holbert of Shelbyville, Ind.; and two grandsons.

Helen Smith Spokane

Funeral for Helen A. Smith, 83, will be at 11 a.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Smith, who was born in Odessa, Wash., died Saturday.

She worked as a waitress in in Spokane for many years.

Her husband, Vincent, preceded her in death.

She is survived by three grandchildren.

Margaret Weidert Spokane

Visitation for Margaret M. Weidert, 69, will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Weidert who died Saturday, was born in Robbinsdale, Minn. She was a 28-year Spokane resident.

She graduated from St. Anthony High School in Minneapolis and worked as an insurance administrator for Medical Service Corp., retiring from Continental Insurance Co.

Mrs. Weidert was a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program through the YMCA and was a community-oriented policing volunteer.

Survivors include four sons, Daniel, John, Jeffrey and Matthew; two daughters Mary Kate and Paula; a sister, Monica Erler; and 10 grandchildren.

George Gau Spokane

Memorial service for George E. Gau, 80, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Opportunity Free Methodist Church. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gau, who was born in Appleton, Minn., died Friday.

He graduated from North Central High School, joining the Marine Corps in 1939. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

Mr. Gau worked in the communications department for U.S. West for 30 years, retiring in 1981.

He was a member of Opportunity Free Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Filomena; three daughters, Marsha Crawford of Spokane, Sharon Hagens of Medical Lake and Patricia Gilmore of Yakima; two sisters, Frances Wells of Spokane and Marian Dixon of Everett, Wash.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

James Noud Spokane

Memorial service for James William Noud, 86, will be held at a later date in Kansas. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

An 18-year Spokane resident, Mr. Noud died Thursday. He was born in Lillis, Kan.

He graduated from Lillis High School in 1930 and joined the Civil Conservation Corps in 1933, serving at a camp in Blackduck, Minn.

In 1938 he married Katherine Waldrip. He held numerous government positions, including a civilian employee with the Air Force.

Mr. Noud retired as chief of system supply and maintenance for the Air Force space missile systems research and development center in Los Angeles in 1975.

He was a ham radio operator with call letters VZW.

His wife died in 1976.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Kay of St. Louis; a brother, Matthew Noud of Cheyenne, Wyo.; two sisters, Patsy Toone of Green River, Wyo., and Frances Howell of Frankfort, Kan.

Stanley Fuher Spokane

Memorial service for Stanley K. Fuher, 66, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Fuher died Sunday.

He served in the Naval Reserve for several years and later worked as a locksmith for Allied Security for 35 years. He retired in 1992.

Mr. Fuher was a lifetime member of the Safe and Vault Technology Association, and was one of the first inductees into its Hall of Fame, in 1993.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Betty; three sons, Kenneth and Mark Fuher, both of Spokane, and Lowell Fuher of Kennewick; his mother, Pauline Fuher-Leaf and her husband, Carl of Spokane; a brother, Steven Fuher of Seattle; and six grandchildren.

Minnie (Simmons) Moore Northport, Wash.

Memorial service for Minnie Ann (Simmons) Moore, 69, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Northport Baptist Church. Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime resident of Stevens County, Mrs. Moore died Saturday. She was born on the family farm near Kelly Hill, Wash.

She grew up on the family homestead and in 1950 married Homer Moore.

They moved to the Flat Creek area where she worked on the family farm and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Moore moved to Northport in 1990.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Ann Coleman of Northport and Marylou Just of Cheney; four brothers, Scott Simmons of Kelly Hill, Jack Simmons of Valley, Wash., Tom Simmons of Kettle Falls, Wash., and Harry Simmons of Ione, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Raymond Garbarino Spokane

Memorial service for Raymond G. Garbarino, 76, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at Mount Mariah Cemetery in Butte, Mont.

A 44-year Spokane resident, Mr. Garbarino died Sunday. He was born in Butte.

He served in World War II and worked for Greyhound Bus Co. for 25 years.

Mr. Garbarino was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Eagles Lodge in Post Falls.

Survivors include a son, Larry Garbarino; and four grandchildren.

Rosemary Heidenreich Spokane

Memorial service for Rosemary Heidenreich, 69, will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Jefferson Street Christian Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 27-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Heidenreich died Friday. She was born in Fruitland Township, Mich.

She worked as a product demonstrator for Stanley Home Products for 10 years and was a member of the Jefferson Street Christian Church.

Two husbands, Eugene Briggs and Carl Heidenreich, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Heidenreich is survived by two sons, Randy and Roger Briggs, both of Spokane; two daughters, Rosanne Love of Spokane and Janet Gravetter of Reno, Nev.; a stepson, Glenn Heidenreich of Singapore; two brothers, Walter and David Sherwood, both of Michigan; and nine grandchildren.

Marla Pestrin Spokane

Funeral Mass for Marla A. Pestrin, 78, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ann Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pestrin, who was born in Italy, died Saturday.

She moved to Spokane in 1950 and became an American citizen in 1971.

Mrs. Pestrin was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Vic Pestrin of Spokane; a sister, Dorine of Italy; two stepgrandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Eugene Lewis Spokane

Memorial service for Eugene A. Lewis, 80, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Lewis died Dec. 10.

He served in the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific during World War II and later was the owner and operator of Lewis Radio Co. and the Hub Tavern in Hillyard.

Mr. Lewis was a member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1474 in Hillyard.

He was also a member of Moose Lodge 161 and the North Hill Masonic Lodge 210.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Betty; three sons, James Lewis of Spokane, Steven Lewis of Bad Kissingen, Germany, and Bruce Lewis of Fort Collins, Colo.; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Susan (Lacy) Kennedy Spokane

No service will be held for Susan Marie (Lacy) Kennedy. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kennedy, who was born in Pineville, Wis., died Saturday. She was 99.

She taught public school in Ladysmith, Wis., Stockett, Mont., and St. Maries, Idaho, in the early 1920s.

Mrs. Kennedy was the principal of the elementary school in Hillyard from 1922 to 1925, before attending Wisconsin State College, where she received her bachelor of education degree in 1929. She received her master’s degree in education from Washington State College in 1934.

Mrs. Kennedy went on to study at Columbia University and Chicago University.

From 1943 to 1953 she was the principal of Arlington, Wilson and Hamilton elementary schools in Spokane. She was also the director of elementary education for the State Office of Public Instruction.

She then served as principal at Whitworth and Evergreen elementary schools, until 1965 when she became the supervisor of student teachers for Eastern Washington University.

In 1970 she married Willard Kennedy, he died in 1977.

Mrs. Kennedy taught summer school at Albion State Normal College in Idaho, Columbia University and at Whitworth College. She was the past president of the Washington Elementary School Principals Association and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development of Northeast Washington.

She was a member of the National Education Association and served as president for the Washington Department of Supervisors and Administrators in 1949. She was also a member and state representative for the National Department of Elementary School Principals from 1952 to 1960.

Mrs. Kennedy was active with the Washington Education Association, Retired Teachers Association, American Association of University Women, Press Club, the Jonas Babcock Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Pi Lambda Theta, American Legion Auxiliary, Brotherhood of Friends Auxiliary, Women of the Moose, Widows of World War I Inc., American Association of Retired Persons, Eastern Washington State Historical Society and the Eastern Washington State Genealogical Society.

Survivors include close friends, Jerry and Peggy Willmering of Spokane; and a godson, William Morelack of Minnesota.

Geraldine (Sumner) Reed Spokane

Memorial service for Geraldine “Gerri” (Sumner) Reed, 81, will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Manito Presbyterian Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 43-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Reed died Dec. 6. She was born in Wenatchee.

She attended the University of Oregon, where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority.

In 1936 she married Donald Reed and for 26 years was a homemaker and a community volunteer in Portland, Wenatchee and Spokane. From 1964 to 1984 she served in various capacities for Gov. Dan Evans and U.S. Sen. Slade Gorton.

Mrs. Reed created Spokane’s first satellite governor’s office, serving as its director from 1965 to 1976.

During the 1974 World’s Fair she organized all the state days, hosting VIPs ranging from President Richard Nixon to future president Jimmy Carter. During the early 1980s she served on Sen. Gorton’s district staff.

She was a lifetime Republican activist, and in the late 1970s served as Spokane County’s State Committeewoman for the Washington State Republican Party. In the early 1990s, she served as president for the Spokane County Women’s Republican Club.

Mrs. Reed also served on the Washington State School Board of Trustees from 1976 to 1987 and was active with the Spokane Post-Polio Support Group Network.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Roger Reed of Spokane and Sam Reed of Olympia; a daughter, Janet Huntley of Olympia; a sister, Janet Borgen of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
