Roland Boulac Spokane

Funeral Mass for Roland B. Boulac, 82, will be at 1 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A Spokane resident since 1922, Mr. Boulac died Saturday. He was born in St. Maries.

He served in the Army Air Corps in the European Theater during World War II.

Mr. Boulac worked as an assistant manager for Seattle First National Bank for 41 years.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Spokane Elks Lodge 228, Knights of Columbus and the American Institute of Banking. He served as past president of the Spokane Chapter of the American Institute of Banking and also served as president of the Administrative Management Society. He was a holder of the St. George’s Medal and a member of the Boy Scouts of America.

His first wife, Faith Boulac, died in 1976. He married Helen Bro in 1979 and she died in 1994.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Bro of Spokane and Thomas Boulac of Seattle; three daughters, Bonnie Abernethey of Spokane, Elaine Grant of Portland and Carol Parrett of Livingston, Texas; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Emma Kurtzhall Valley, Wash.

Memorial service for Emma Jane Kurtzhall, 64, will be at 2 p.m. today at Open Door Congregational Church in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kurtzhall, who was born in Portland, died Monday.

She moved to the Williams Valley area of Deer Park with her family and attended schools.

In 1950 she married Maynard Kurtzhall.

Mrs. Kurtzhall worked in the health care industry for 30 years, starting as a cook’s helper at the Deer Park Hospital. She had worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital for the past 10 years.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Lindell McWhorter of Walla Walla, Patricia Mally of Valley, Wash., and Debbie MacArthur of Metaline, Wash.; a brother, Jess Lynch, Jr., of Clayton, Wash.; two sisters, Irene Hamilton of LaGrande, Ore., and Darlene Zimmerer of Deer Park; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Grace Nichols Spokane

Funeral for Grace E. Nichols, 68, will be at 2 p.m. today at Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Burial will follow. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Nichols, who was born in St. Maries, died Saturday.

She graduated from Deaconess School of Nursing in 1951 and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington School of Nursing in 1956.

Miss Nicholas worked as a public health nursing specialist for the City of Spokane and local school districts before she began working in rural health nursing for the Spokane County Health District. She retired in 1996.

After retirement, she helped maintain various medical libraries.

Miss Nichols was a member of the Crestline Church of the Nazarene, Eagles Lodge Auxiliary and the Deaconess Alumni Organization.

She is survived by two brothers, Adrian and Charles Nichols, both of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Crestline Church of the Nazarene.

Orland Forry Spokane

Visitation for Orland Forry, 86, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

A 65-year Spokane resident, Mr. Forry died Sunday. He was born in Kellogg.

Mr. Forry was a carpenter and a 50-year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 98.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.

His wife of 65 years, Elisa, died in 1998.

Survivors include a daughter, Sheila Purdy of Spokane; a sister, Ferne Ware of Davenport, Wash.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Oscar Johnson Spokane

Visitation for Oscar H. Johnson, 86, will be from 1 to 2 p.m. today at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel, in Hayden. Service will be at 2 p.m. at the chapel. Burial will follow at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in St. Paul, Minn., died Saturday.

He grew up in Saskatchewan and worked at the smelter in Trail, B.C., before moving to Spokane to work at Kaiser Aluminum during World War II.

Mr. Johnson retired from Kaiser in 1969 and moved to Bull Lake, Mont., in 1970, where he lived for 14 years before moving to Post Falls.

Mr. Johnson later moved to the Sullivan Care Center in Spokane.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah; a daughter, Linda Abrams of Liberty Lake; two sons, Lloyd Johnson of Spokane and Loren Johnson of Troy, Mont.; two stepsons, Roger Duczek of Lima, Mont., and Jerry Duczek of Tonasket, Wash.; a stepdaughter, Carol Ann Besas of Spokane; six brothers, Clarence, Grant, Lloyd, Arthur and Lynn Johnson, all of Saskatchewan, and Lawrence Johnson of British Columbia; three sisters, Ida of British Columbia, and Edith and Myrtle, both of Sprague, Wash.; 22 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Marion `Sue’ Vhay Spokane

Funeral for Marion “Sue” Vhay, 91, will be at 11:30 a.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Vhay, who was born in Jamestown, N.Y., died Saturday.

She moved to Spokane in 1945 and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Vhay lived at the St. Joseph Care Center for the past two years.

Her husband of 55 years, John, died in 1990.

Survivors include a son, John Vhay, Jr., of Beaverton, Ore.; three daughters, Sarah Smith of Spokane, Elizabeth Shaw of Colville, Wash., and Mary Vhay of Fremont, Calif.; 21 grandchildren and 21 greatgrandchildren.

Edward Irvine Salem, Ore.

Visitation for Edward F. Irvine, 87, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Funeral will follow at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Born in Lone Pine, Mont., Mr. Irvine died Feb. 13.

He moved to Spokane in 1950 and worked as a custodian for Hollister-Stier Laboratories. He also worked for Patterson Potato Chips and Western Pine.

Mr. Irvine was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

In 1976 he moved to Oregon.

His first wife, June Irvine, died in 1976. His second wife, Mae Gladden Irvine, died in 1997.

Survivors include a daughter, MariEllen McLeod of Spokane; three sons, Isaac Irvine of Spokane, Edward Irvine of Deer Park and Franklin Irvine of Washougal, Wash.; two stepdaughters, Lillian Thompson and Patsy Roth; five stepsons, Wayne, Larry, Dale, Marvin and Frank Gladden Jr.; a sister, Eva Adair of Mount Vernon, Wash.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gladys Bettfreund Spokane

Memorial service for Gladys K. Bettfreund, 89, is planned for 2 p.m. Friday at the Unity Church of Truth, 29th and Bernard. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bettfreund, who was born in Loon Lake, Wash., died Feb. 14.

She graduated from Jenkins High School in Chewelah, Wash.

She owned and operated American Kennel Club kennels in Deer Park for many years and raised championship St. Bernards and Irish setters.

Her husband, William, died in 1981.

Survivors include two stepbrothers and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bradley Kittilson Seattle

Memorial service for Bradley J. Kittilson, a former longtime Odessa, Wash., resident, was Friday at Heritage Church in Odessa, Wash. Inurnment was at the Odessa Cemetery.

Mr. Kittilson, who was born in Odessa, died Feb. 14. He was 44.

He worked as a ship builder and moved to Seattle several years ago.

Survivors include a daughter, Coire Jade of Billings, Mont.; his mother, Donna Kittilson of Seattle; and a sister, Ronda Caudill of Seattle.

Sebastian `Lefty’ Aleffi Spokane

Visitation for Sebastian “Lefty” Aleffi, 85, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Trentwood.

A 55-year Spokane resident, Mr. Aleffi died Saturday. He was born in Union City, N.J.

He married his wife, Jacomena, in 1938 and served with the Civilian Conservation Corps on Mount Spokane, and in Priest River, Idaho, and Berkeley, Calif., for three years.

Mr. Aleffi later worked as a driver for Consolidated Freight Co., retiring in 1974 after 32 years.

He was a member of the Eagles Lodge No. 2, Teamsters Local 690 and a 44-year member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Katherine Fisher of Valleyford, Mary Albright of Greenacres and Jean Swanson of Newman Lake; three sisters, all in New Jersey; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Francis `Duke’ Thyrian Spokane

Vigil for Francis J. “Duke” Thyrian, 87, will be at 7 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Thursdayat St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Trentwood.

A 71-year Spokane resident, Mr. Thyrian died Friday. He was born in San Francisco.

Mr. Thyrian lived in Honolulu with his parents before moving to the Spokane Valley in 1928. He graduated from North Central High Central.

He served in the Army during World War II and later worked as a truck driver in the concrete industry.

He married Grace Wrighter in 1936. She died in 1992.

Survivors include a daughter, Charlene Herrick of Chewelah, Wash.; a son, Francis Thyrian of Renton, Wash.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Walter Griffin Spokane

No service will be held for Walter I. Griffin, 97, at his request. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 50-year Spokane resident, Mr. Griffin died Saturday. He was born in Walla Walla.

Mr. Griffin retired from Washington Water Power and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Eagles Lodge No. 2 and the National Rifle Association. He was a lifetime member of the Universal Benevolent Society.

His first wife, Rose, died in 1981. He married Marie Pochop in 1984.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Robert Griffin of Hayden Lake, Idaho, Donald Griffin of East Wenatchee, Wash., and David Ronnfeldt of Chattaroy; two daughters, Delores Reikafski of Foster, Neb., and Maxine Rettig of Loma Linda, Calif.; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

James Kelly Hayden, Idaho

Visitation for James Russell Kelly, 86, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Service is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Kelly, who died Sunday, was born in Los Angeles.

He grew up and graduated from high school in California and in 1935 married Dorothy Shryock.

Mr. Kelly worked as a farmer and rancher in California from 1934 until retiring in 1970.

He moved to Hayden in 1993.

Survivors include his wife; a son, James Kelly of Othello, Wash.; a daughter, Shirley Anne Decker of Dalton Gardens, Idaho; two brothers, H.O. Kelly and C.W. Kelly, both of California; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Jeanette Hansen Spokane

Memorial service for Jeanette F. Hansen, 68, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home.

Born in Moscow, Idaho, Mrs. Hansen died Sunday.

She was a homemaker and a 62-year Spokane resident.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, William; six sons, Tom, Joe, Richard and Ryan Hansen, all of Spokane, Robert Hansen of Puyallup, Wash., and Jeff Hansen of Juneau, Alaska; four daughters, Jennifer Hansen, Lisa McIntyre and Sara Connors, all of Spokane, and Jocelyn Labrier of Phoenix; two sisters, Lois Putnam of Friday Harbor, Wash., and Bernice Henry of Sublimity, Ore.; and 20 grandchildren.

Miker Brown Spokane

Memorial service for Miker A. Brown, 37, is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday at Riplinger Funeral Home.

A 35-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Brown died Sunday. She was born in Midland, Texas.

Mrs. Brown earned a degree in criminal justice from Gonzaga University in 1995.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Spokane Country Club.

Survivors include her husband, Paul; a daughter, Shayla Morford; her mother, Jean Bowman of Spokane; a brother, Joe Bowman, and a sister, Becky Bowman, both of Spokane.

Ed Reynolds Post Falls

Viewing for Ed G. Reynolds, 86, will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls. Service will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral chapel. Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery in Post Falls.

Mr. Reynolds, who died Monday, was born and raised in the Post Falls area He was a farmer and logger, and worked for Jacklin Seed Co. before retiring in 1977.

Mr. Reynolds attended the Pleasantview Baptist Church and Falls Full Gospel Church.

Survivors include three brothers, Chet and Homer Reynolds, both of Post Falls, and Andrew Reynolds of Spokane; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Clarice Knowles Spokane

Private service for Clarice L. Knowles, 88, will be held at a later date. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Knowles who died Friday, was a lifetime Spokane resident.

Mrs. Knowles worked as a stock and purchasing agent for J.C. Penney Co., and was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Knowles of Spokane and Jim Knowles of Arlington, Va.; a daughter, Gloria Knowles of Spokane; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

William Wunderlich Spokane

No service will be held for William J. “Bill” Wunderlich, 76, at his request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wunderlich, who died Sunday, was born in Spokane.

He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps for a few years and later served in the Army during World War II.

Mr. Wunderlich worked for the City of Spokane Water Department and as a custodian for Spokane School District 81. He retired from Lidgerwood Elementary after 20 years.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian; two stepdaughters, Marselle McDougall of Boise and Patricia Dupre of Spokane; two sisters; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Edward Jennings Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Edward Louis Jennings, 85, will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Mr. Jennings, who was born in Spokane, died Feb. 17.

He moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1947 and purchased Hart Drug Store. He operated the store until he retired in 1977.

Mr. Jennings was a former member of the Coeur d’Alene Rotary and the Gentleman on Horseback.

He was a member of Coeur d’Alene Bible Church, and the Washington State and Idaho State Pharmaceutical associations.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Margaret; a son, Mark Jennings of Tinker Air Force Base, Okla.; two daughters, Gayle Jennings of Coeur d’Alene and Laurie Jennings of Colorado; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Catherine Offutt Spokane

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Offutt died Sunday.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, John, died in 1969.

Survivors include a son, Tom Offutt of Spokane; two brothers, Sidney and Delbert Mead, and a sister, Marjorie Taes, all of Spokane; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Lois Johnson Spokane

Visitation for Lois H. Johnson, 75, will be from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Moran Cemetery.

Mrs. Johnson died Monday. She was born in Aberdeen, Wash., and was a 47-year Spokane resident.

She graduated from Hanford-White Bluff High School in Washington and was a member of the Hanford-White Bluff Pioneers.

In 1952 she married Harold Johnson. They co-owned Cedar Street Grocery in Spokane for 13 years.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of Beacon Bible Church in Spokane.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Donald Johnson of Spokane and John Johnson of Tenino, Wash.; a daughter, Kathy Brown of Spokane; and three grandchildren.

William Miller Spokane

Memorial service for William E. Miller, 74, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Miller, who died Sunday, was born in Spokane.

He graduated from Rogers High School in 1943 and served in the Navy from 1944 until 1954.

Mr. Miller established a sales career as a wholesale drug representative and sales manager.

He moved to Missoula in 1963 and became a founding director of Loyola-Sacred Heart.

Mr. Miller was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Kiwanis.

He returned to Spokane three years ago.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; three sons, Bill Miller of Libby, Mont., Tim Miller of Florence, Mont., and John Miller of Wasilla, Alaska; two daughters, Jane Auld of Spokane and Joan Proctor of Mill Creek, Wash.; a sister, Sophie Miller of Sebring, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Inga Mee Spokane

Graveside service for Inga Olive “Ina” Mee, a former Newport, Wash., resident, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Newport Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mee, who was born in Litchville, N.D., died Sunday. She was 97.

She moved to Newport in 1947 and married Lisle Mee. She owned and operated the Diamond Lake Lodge and Resort with her husband from 1948 until the mid 1960s. Her husband died in 1971.

Mrs. Mee moved to Spokane in 1987.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Ida Reynolds of Reardan, Wash.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Robert Bell Spokane

Memorial service for Robert Bell, 88, will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

A 44-year Spokane resident, Mr. Bell died Saturday. He was born in Florence, Mont.

Mr. Bell worked as a civil engineer for Inland Asphalt for 15 years.

His wife, Gertrude, died in 1985.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Wetzel and Kathy Nelson, both of Spokane; and four grandsons.
