Stanley Jensen Spokane

Memorial service for Stanley A. Jensen will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Private inurnment will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Jensen died Sunday. He was 75.

He served as a pilot with the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Jensen was chairman and chief executive officer of Jensen Distribution Service and a former board member of the Old National Bank, First National Bank and US National Bank.

He was a past president for the National Hardware Association and was a member of the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. He was a member of Spokane Country Club and the Prosperity, Empire, Washington Athletic and Spokane clubs.

His first wife, Helen, died in 1995.

Survivors include his wife, Trudy; two sons, Michael and Stanley Jensen, both of Spokane; three daughters, Patty Busto of Spokane, Sally Girard of Los Angeles and Molly Campbell of Sydney, Australia; a sister, Shirley Woodward of Huntington Beach, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Boys Scouts of America Inland Northwest Council or St. George’s School.

John `Jack’ Ely, M.D. Post Falls

Memorial service for Dr. John C. “Jack” Ely, 78, will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Unity Church of North Idaho, 4465 N. 15th St., Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Ely, who was born in Glasgow, Ky., died Saturday.

As a naval fighter pilot during World War II, he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, eight Air Medals and two presidential citations.

Dr. Ely was a division leader aboard the USS Essex before retiring as a lieutenant commander.

He then received a pharmacy and pre-medicine degree at Purdue University in Indiana and a medical degree from Tulane University in New Orleans.

He married Dell Douglass, and they moved to Spokane, where he completed an internship at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Dr. Ely ran a private practice clinic in the Spokane Valley for 18 years and then served as a chief health officer in South Korea for the U.S. Agency for International Development.

He returned to Spokane and worked as the director of the emergency room at Holy Family Hospital. In 1979 he moved to Saudi Arabia, where he worked as a hospital department head and in 1981 he moved to Post Falls.

Dr. Ely served on the board of directors and was past president of the Spokane County Medical Society and was a member of the American Academy of Family Practice.

He had served as chairman of the steering committee for the construction of Valley General Hospital.

He also was a member of the Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce, Spokane Valley Rotary Club and Quiet Birdmen.

Survivors include his wife, Dell; a son, John Ely of Spokane; two daughters, Roye Ely of Coeur d’Alene and Adrienne Ely of Port Townsend, Wash.; a sister, Betty Ely of Kentucky; and nine grandchildren.

Florence (Lange) Gillespie Moscow, Idaho

Memorial service for Florence “Flossie” (Lange) Gillespie, 91, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Good Samaritan Village in Moscow. Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gillespie, who was born in Blanchard, Idaho, died Friday.

She earned her degree as a registered nurse from the Deaconess School of Nursing in 1930 and moved to Moscow that year.

After her marriage to R.C. Lange, she worked at Gritman Hospital in Moscow for 30 years.

Her first husband died in 1975. She married Allen Gillespie in 1985.

Mrs. Gillespie was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Moscow.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Jerry Lange of Spokane; and two grandsons.

Ernest Sacco Spokane

Visitation for Ernest A “Ernie” Sacco, 77, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday at the Roman Catholic Cathedral Of Our Lady Of Lourdes.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Sacco died Monday.

He attended Garfield Elementary School and in 1940 graduated from North Central High School.

Mr. Sacco attended Washington State University before serving with the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He worked as a salesman for Sears before retiring from Montgomery Ward in 1986.

Mr. Sacco was a volunteer for Hospice of Spokane and was a member of the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady Of Lourdes. He was a member of the East Spokane Kiwanis Club, American Italian Club, American Association of Retired Persons, Spokane Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau, Sacred Heart Medical Center Service League and the Commercial Travelers.

His first wife, Thelma, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his second wife of eight years, Kathleen; a son, Michael Sacco of Spokane; a daughter, Christine Williams of Carmel, Calif.; four stepchildren, Brian Ross, Megan Beach and Lisa and Ross Donner; two sisters, Laura Perry and Marian Fruci, both of Spokane; six grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.

Luella Crisler Fairfield

Funeral for Luella Fae Crisler, 75, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

A 61-year Spokane County resident, Mrs. Crisler died Sunday. She was born in St. John, N.D.

Mrs. Crisler was a homemaker and a member of the Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church and the Eagles Lodge.

Her husband, Eugene Crisler, died in 1993.

Survivors include a daughter, Ella Jean Fox; a brother, Myron Putman; and two sisters, Georgia Knowles and Mary Johnson, all of Spokane; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Timothy McAleer Spokane

Memorial service for Timothy S. McAleer, 48, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McAleer, who died Friday, was born in Reading, Pa.

He grew up and attended schools in Chicago before graduating from Mead High School.

Mr. McAleer worked as a machine operator in the lumber industry.

He lived in Curlew, Wash., for many years before moving to Spokane two years ago.

Survivors include his brother, Terry McAleer of Redmond, Wash.; and two sisters, Kathleen McAleer and Colleen Brake, both of Spokane.

Gene Kelly Mead

Memorial service for Gene Kelly, 82, will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph’s Church in Colbert. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kelly, who was born in Vita, Manitoba, died Sunday. He was an 11-year Spokane resident.

He worked as an accountant in the banking industry for several years.

Survivors include his wife, Claudia; a son, Conrad Kelly of Mead; two sisters, Helen Wachna and Elsie Smook; a granddaughter and a great-grandson.

Lucille Seyfried Spokane

Memorial service for Lucille Rose Seyfried, 79, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be at Pines Cemetery.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Seyfried died June 12.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Warren, preceded her in death.

Survivors include numerous cousins, including Evelyn Meile of Spokane.

Judy Cole Hayden, Idaho

Memorial service for Judy Joan Cole, 45, was held Monday at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel. A reception followed at the Yates Hayden Chapel gathering center.

Mrs. Cole, who was born in Spokane, died Wednesday.

She grew up and attended University High School in Spokane and in 1971 married David Cole.

She lived in Spokane and worked as a seamstress for Pacific Trail and All Seasons Apparel. In 1987 she settled in Hayden, where she and her husband co-owned Ace Auto and Boat Upholstery.

Survivors include her husband of 28 years, David; a daughter, Shastadi Watts of Rathdrum, Idaho; a son, David Cole of Hayden Lake; her stepmother, Gerri Knudson of Spokane; four brothers, Kenny Knudson, the Rev. Bill Knudson and Gary Knudson, all of Spokane, and Steve Knudson of Post Falls; five sisters, Ann Napier, Janet Potter, Sharon Tucker, Gloria Oyler and Linda Marley, all of Spokane; and three grandchildren.

Barbara Robinson Spokane

Memorial service for Barbara C. Robinson, 75, will be at 2 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be at Greenwood Cemetery.

A 23-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Robinson, died Friday. She was born in Bellingham.

She graduated from Washington State University in 1947 with a bachelor’s degree in music and education.

Mrs. Robinson was a homemaker and a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Robert; two sons, John Robinson of Bend, Ore., and Gregory Robinson of Columbus, Miss.; two daughters, Ann Robinson of Spokane and Zoe Greatorex of Marysville, Wash.; two brothers, Edgar Critchlow of Spokane and John Critchlow of Bellingham; a sister, Helen Jones of Bellingham; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Medical Center’s Sister Peter Claver Endowment Fund or the Music Department at Washington State University.

Genevieve Winslow Spokane

Private service was held for Genevieve Marion Winslow, 98. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Winslow, who was born in Michigan, died Saturday.

She moved to Spokane and attended elementary school on Moran Prairie.

Mrs. Winslow married John deRuiter in 1919. He died in 1955.

She remarried to Lawrence Winslow in 1957. He died in 1994.

Mrs. Winslow wrote for the Moran Community newspaper in the 1930s and was in charge of the Moran Cemetery for many years.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Moran United Methodist Church, Moran Grange and the Home Economics Club.

Survivors include a daughter, Marion Pierce of Spokane; four grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Virgil Cremeen Wilbur, Wash.

Funeral for Virgil L. Cremeen, a 59-year Wilbur resident, was held Monday at the Wilbur Presbyterian Church. Burial followed at the Wilbur Cemetery. Strate Funeral Home in Wilbur was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cremeen, who was born in Arcadia, Neb., died Thursday. He was 88.

He worked as a mechanic and a farmer in the Wilbur area for many years.

Survivors include two sons, Kent and Larry Cremeen; a sister, Doris Spradlin; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mary Fairhurst Olympia

Rosary for Mary Whitney Fairhurst, a former longtime Spokane resident and community activist, will be at 7:30 p.m. today at the Bellarmine Prep Chapel in Tacoma. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday at the chapel. Burial will follow at Haven of Rest in Gig Harbor, Wash. Gaffney Cassedy Allen & Buckley King Funeral Home in Tacoma is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Fairhurst, who was born in San Francisco, died Saturday. She was 63.

She married Stanley Fairhurst in 1956, and they moved to Spokane in 1975.

Mrs. Fairhurst was a founding member of Hospice of Spokane. She was the first lay chaplain at Sacred Heart Medical Center and was a member of the hospital’s pastoral care department.

She was a member and past president of the Catholic Women’s Guild of Honolulu.

Mrs. Fairhurst moved to Olympia in 1998.

Survivors include her husband; seven children, Mary and Tori Fairhurst, and Katy Taylor, all of Olympia, Ann McLane of Spokane, Vince Fairhurst of Vancouver, Wash., Ken Fairhurst of Everett and Laura Coppock of Dubuque, Iowa; two sisters, Barbara Brisbois of San Mateo, Calif., and Betsy Dillon of San Carlos, Calif.; two brothers, Whit Olson of Vancouver and John Olson of Manning, Ore.; and 11 grandchildren.

Janice Gray Spokane

Graveside service for Janice M. Gray, a longtime Spokane resident, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gray died Thursday. She was 85.

Born in Rathdrum, Idaho, she later moved to Buckeye, Wash., where her mother became postmaster.

She graduated from Mead High School and in 1932 married Fred Gray.

Mrs. Gray was a homemaker and a member of Spokane Valley Elks Lodge 2328.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Robert Gray of Newport, Wash.; a daughter, Bonnie Peebler of Spokane; four grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Lance Tibbett Spokane

Memorial service for Lance Edwin Tibbett, 52, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Inland Northwest Wildlife Council, 6116 N. Market. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Tibbett, who was born in Spokane, died Sunday.

He served with the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Tibbett worked as an electrician in the machine manufacturing industry for several years.

He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, Hillyard Business Association and Church of Resurrection.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Dean; two sons, Shane and Philip Tibbett, and a daughter, Ronda Tibbett, all of Spokane; three sisters, Sharon Dawson and Diane Gannon, both of Spokane, and Judy Bell of Diamond Lake, Wash.; and six grandchildren.

Margaret (Chambers) Latterell Spokane

Memorial Mass for Margaret Frances (Chambers) Latterell, 93, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Burial will be in Columbia Falls, Mont. Shaffer Jensen Funeral Home in Payette, Idaho, was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Latterell, who was born in Cheney, died June 7 at the home of her daughter in Ontario, Ore.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and went on to become a teacher. She retired from teaching in the Spokane area in 1971.

Survivors include a daughter, Sue Kaatz of Ontario; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Glenn Thompson Colville, Wash.

Funeral service for Charles Glenn Thompson will be held at 2 p.m. today at Colville Free Methodist Church. Graveside services will follow at Mountain View Park Cemetery in Colville. Danekas Funeral Home in Colville is in charge of arrangements.

A 59-year Colville resident, Mr. Thompson died Friday. He was 92.

Born in Asotin, Wash., he attended school at the Albright Country School and Asotin High School.

He married Lucile Buckolz in 1932, and they moved to Colville in 1940.

Mr. Thompson worked for the Mamau Dairy for four years before working as a truck driver for the Washington Highway Department.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Nathan Thompson of Spokane, Dan Thompson of Colville and Marlow Thompson of Sanders, Idaho; a daughter, Darline Hubbert of Ashley, Mich.; two sisters, Rachael Mumau of Colville and Lela Marvin of Clarkston, Wash.; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Chester Herrin Spokane

Graveside service for Chester C. Herrin, 83, was Tuesday at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Herrin, who was born in Wise County, Texas, died Saturday as a result of hemochromatosis, which also took the life of his son Sean in 1998.

He was a 42-year Spokane County resident.

He served as a supply officer in the Air Force, serving in England and Germany during World War II and participating in the Berlin Airlift. He also served during the Vietnam War. He retired as a master sergeant in 1970.

Mr. Herrin was a longtime member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Patricia; a daughter, Kathleen McLaughlin of Kent, Wash.; five sons, Michael Herrin of Enumclaw, Wash., Mark Herrin of Des Moines, Wash., Jeff Herrin of Centralia, Wash., Bradley Herrin of Renton, Wash., and Patrick Herrin of Redmond, Wash.; 12 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Lonnie Newell Loon Lake, Wash.

Memorial service for Lonnie G. Newell, 68, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 34221 N. Newport Highway, Chattaroy. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Newell, who was born in Spokane, died Friday.

He served with the Army Air Corps during World War II and during the United States occupation of Japan.

In 1948 he married Shirley Ethridge, and they settled in Spokane.

Mr. Newell worked for Garco Steel Building for several years. He moved to Springdale, Wash., and then to Loon Lake in 1974.

He was a member of Boilermaker Union Local 242 and the Moose Lodge in Loon Lake. He was active with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Boys Scouts of America, Mountain Springs 4-H Horse Club and the Future Farmers of America Sheep Club.

Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Lonnie Anderson of Springdale, Wash., Rose Thorstenson and Martha Jennen, both of Spokane, and Betty Goad and Gale Lane, both of Loon Lake; three sons, Michael Newell of Spokane, David Newell of Medical Lake and Danny Massingill-Newell of Clayton, Wash.; two sisters, Norma Mace of Spokane and Carol Shultz of Deer Park; a brother, Edward Hatcher of Deer Park; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
