Actor Bratt Leaving ‘Law’
Benjamin Bratt is leaving the NBC drama “Law & Order,” becoming the latest in a long succession of actors who have checked out of the series after putting in a few years of service.
Bratt, who played Det. Reynaldo Curtis, will leave at the conclusion of this season, his fourth. He will be replaced by Jesse L. Martin, best-known for recent guest shots on “Ally McBeal,” in which he played Ally’s boyfriend, and “The X-Files.”
“Law” creator and executive producer Dick Wolf said Bratt is welcome to reprise his role in the upcoming spinoff about the NYPD sex crimes unit, “Law & Order: SCU.” The actor Bratt replaced, Chris Noth, returned in a “Law” TV movie for NBC this season.
Next month, Bratt starts work on Paramount feature “The Next Best Thing,” which stars Madonna and Rupert Everett.
Bratt said it was “an extremely difficult decision” but “after four years I’ve felt like it was time to get back home to my family” on the West Coast. “Law,” which has been renewed by NBC for another three seasons, is shot on location in New York.
Bratt will be written out of the series in the season finale airing May 26. His character will decide to leave the NYPD to spend more time with his wife, who is battling multiple sclerosis, and three daughters.
