Wendell Brainard Kellogg

Memorial service for Wendell Robert Brainard, 84, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Brainard, who was born in Wardner, Idaho, died Sunday.

He graduated from Kellogg High School and earned a degree in political science from Willamette University in Salem, Ore.

He married Dorothy Henley in 1941.

Mr. Brainard returned to the Silver Valley and worked in various small mines with his brother before enlisting in the Army.

He served as a sergeant during World War II with the 556th Engineers Unit stationed in Guam and the Philippines.

In 1948 he became the editor of the Kellogg Evening News. He worked in journalism for more than 40 years and was the author of “Golden History Tales.”

Mr. Brainard was a member of the American Legion, the Kellogg Kiwanis, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Masonic Lodge. He served as secretary for the Kellogg Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Dan Brainard of Sandpoint; three daughters, Wendy Halfhide of Coeur d’Alene, Kathy Brainard of Cheney and Roberta Garner of Spokane; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

John Bradetich Jr. Sandpoint

Service for John Bradetich Jr. 77, will be today at 10 a.m. at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Sandpoint.

Mr. Bradetich, who was born in Sandpoint, died Thursday.

A lifelong Sandpoint resident, he married Margaret Hatcher in 1942.

Mr. Bradetich served as a sergeant and a radio operator with the Army Air Corps during World War II. He returned to Sandpoint and worked for Schafer-Hitchcock Pole Yard.

Mr. Bradetich and his wife bought the Boyer Grocery Store in 1952 and expanded into M & J Supermarket in 1962, before building the Sandpoint Discount Warehouse in 1972.

He sold the warehouse store in 1982 and settled on a ranch in Samuels, Idaho, and spent winters in Yuma, Ariz.

He was a longtime member of the Sandpoint Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, JoAnn Ozbun of Arizona, Mary Ann Davis of Samuels, Carol Bradetich of Anchorage, Alaska, and Rhonda Bradetich-Tifft of Sagle, Idaho; four brothers, Phil Bradetich of Coeur d’Alene, Dick and Joe Bradetich, both of Sagle, and Don Bradetich of Oregon; two sisters, Mary Curliss of Coeur d’Alene and Rose Bloom of Thompson Falls, Mont.; 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Albert Newton Athol, Idaho

Memorial service for Albert C. “Al” Newton, 62, will be Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel, with a reception to follow at the Yates Hayden Chapel Gathering Center.

Mr. Newton, who was born in Corvallis, Ore., died Sunday.

He grew up in Corvallis and Bend, Ore., and then attended junior college in Bend before working for the U.S. Forest Service in Oregon and Montana.

Mr. Newton married Lorena Schelin in 1974 and later moved to Coeur d’Alene, where he worked as a log scaler for private lumber companies. He also was a professional bass guitar player.

He recently worked in janitorial service.

He was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Christian Center and Worldwide Church of God, and was a volunteer at Life Care Center in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Newton was involved in rock hunting and lapidary work.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert Newton of Bend; a brother, Ivan Newton of Corvallis; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Coralie Lee Spokane

Funeral Mass for Coralie C. Lee, 89, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident and homemaker, Mrs. Lee died Friday.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, L. Gordon Lee; a son, Roger Lee of Spokane; a sister, Loretta Larango of Spokane; a brother, Herman Muto of Seattle; two granddaughters and two great-grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or the American Cancer Society.

Bill Hamblin Santa, Idaho

Memorial service for Bill Hamblin, 63, will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Fernwood Community Church in Fernwood, Idaho. Burial took place at an earlier date at Johnson Cemetery in London, Ky. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hamblin, who was born in Harlan, Ky., died Oct. 14.

He grew up in Kentucky, and served with the Marine Corp during the Korean War. He married Shirley Fender in 1977.

Mr. Hamblin lived in Medical Lake and was an automotive mechanic for many years. He moved to Santa in 1993.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, William and Steven Hamblin, both of Indiana; a stepson, Curtis Fender of Florida; a stepdaughter, Cynthia McConville of Washougal, Wash.; a brother, Donald Hamblin of Indiana; six sisters, Delora Osborne of Ohio, Wanda Gregory and Margie Speckner, both of Indiana, Lois Moraca of Montana, and Carol Reinacher and Laura “Cricket” Burke, both of Kentucky; three grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Regina Zimmerman Coeur d’Alene

Visitation for Regina L. Swingle Zimmerman, 92, will be today from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Service will follow at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Zimmerman, who was born in Lake Ariel, Pa., died Saturday.

She attended high school and college in Takoma Park, Md., and taught school for six years in Pennsylvania before working at Katz Underwear Factory in Honesdale, Pa., for two years.

She moved to Roundup, Mont., and married Ben Zimmerman. They lived on a ranch for seven years before settling in Coeur d’Alene, where they opened the Spudnut Shop on Fourth St. They operated the shop seven days a week for 10 years. She later sold the business and worked for Clare Pendar for 13 years.

She was a member of the Grandmothers Club and Family Birthday Club, and was a longtime member of the Coeur d’Alene Eagles Auxiliary.

Her husband died in 1989.

Mrs. Zimmerman was a quilter, crafter and fired-glass artist.

Survivors include two sons, Walter Zimmerman of Coeur d’Alene and Ben Zimmerman of Post Falls; nine grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren.

Paula Johnson Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Service for Paula Marie Johnson, 48, will be today at 2 p.m. at the Bonners Ferry Funeral Home with burial to follow at Grandview Cemetery in Bonners Ferry.

Mrs. Johnson, who was born in Amarillo, Texas, died Friday.

She lived in Texas until moving to South Colby, Wash., in 1966. She married Stanley Johnson in 1970.

Mrs. Johnson lived in South Colby before moving to Tacoma for several months, and then settled in Eugene, Ore.

She moved to Amarillo in 1974 and returned to Eugene before moving to Kennewick in 1976. She moved to Bonners Ferry in 1983 and Kennewick in 1984. In 1991 she moved back to Bonners Ferry to care for her mother.

Survivors include her husband of 29 years, Stanley; a daughter, Rickki Kavarie of Bonners Ferry; a son, Lorren Johnson of Kennewick; her mother and stepfather, Lela and Jessie Ellis, both of Bonners Ferry; two brothers, Ralph Robinson, both of Bonners Ferry, and Donald Robinson of Moyie Springs, Idaho; a stepbrother, Fred Ellis of Post Falls; and four grandchildren.

James Roberts Kellogg

Service for James Wesley Roberts, 60, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pinehurst, Idaho. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Roberts, who was born in Montana, died Friday.

In 1984 he moved to Kellogg from Redding, Calif., and married Deborah Rasmussen in Reno.

Mr. Roberts worked as a truck driver on the Superfund cleanup.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pinehurst.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Perry Roberts of California, and James and David Roberts, both of Florida; two daughters, Roxanne of California and Kimberly of Iowa; two stepsons, Robert Rasmassen and William Knapp, both of Idaho; two brothers, Bob Roberts of Idaho and Albert Roberts of California; a sister, Lila Bebee of California; a stepbrother, Bud Bebee of Montana; and several grandchildren.

Ivan Dea Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Ivan D. Dea, 82, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Post Falls Eagles Aerie, 209 E. Railroad. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dea, who was born in Great Falls, Mont., died Sunday.

He worked as a carpenter before moving to Spokane in the early 1950s. He purchased I & I Beauty and Barber Supplies Inc.

Mr. Dea moved to a river house in Coeur d’Alene in 1975 and retired in 1980.

He was active with various organizations and clubs in the Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls area.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Kaliko of Honolulu and Carolyn Umland of Athol, Idaho; his companion, Donna Bradley of Coeur d’Alene; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Paul Calabretta III Kingston, Idaho

A celebration of life for Paul Gordon Calabretta III, 50, will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at Winebrenner’s, 409 S. Division, in Pinehurst, Idaho. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Calabretta, who was born in Kellogg, died Saturday.

He graduated from Kellogg High School in 1967 and worked in various mines in the Northwest, having spent most of his life in the Silver Valley.

Survivors include eight children, Colleen Bowman and Christopher Calabretta, both of Florida, Kimberly Jones of Coeur d’Alene, Courtney and Elissa Calabretta, both of Pinehurst, and Kaela, Kyle and Kacie Calabretta, all of Kellogg; his father, Paul Calabretta Jr. of Kellogg; two sisters, Mary Decker of Prichard, Idaho, and Toni Hill of Page, Idaho; and four grandchildren.

Doris (Robinson) Harris SeaTac, Wash.

Memorial service for Doris Lily (Robinson) Harris, 92, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Simpson United Methodist Church in Pullman. Burial will be held prior at the Pullman Cemetery. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Harris, who was born in Dartford, England, died Thursday.

Her family moved to Toronto in 1919.

She married George Harris in 1934, and they lived in Toronto until 1952, when they moved to Pullman.

Mrs. Harris was a homemaker, and a member of Simpson United Methodist Church.

After her husband died in 1995, Mrs. Harris moved to SeaTac.

Survivors include a son, Norman Harris of Renton, Wash.; a daughter, Dorian Harris of Clackamas, Ore.; two grandsons and two great-grandsons.

Louise Penna Spokane

Committal service for Louise L. Penna, 84, will be at 10 a.m. today at the chapel at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Penna died Sunday.

She worked as a meat packer at the Hygrade Packing Co. for 19 years.

Mrs. Penna was a member of St. Patrick’s Parish.

Her husband, Raymond, died in 1986.

Survivors include a son, Robert Burns, and a daughter, Gloria Harding, both of Spokane; a sister, Jeanette Mantello of Spokane; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick’s Parish or to Shriners Hospital For Children.

James Fumino Spokane

Private services will be held for James Xavier Fumino, 88, at a later date. Inurnment will be at Ocean View Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Fumino died Friday.

He served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Fumino worked in the construction industry as a plasterer.

His wife, Alice, died in 1966.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane Kiper of Langley, British Columbia; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Robert Hughes Hauser Lake, Idaho

No service will be held for Robert Clifford Hughes, 83. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hughes, who was born in Soap Lake, Wash., died Nov. 12.

He grew up in Adrian, Wash., and moved to Spokane, where he lived until moving to Hauser Lake in 1981.

Mr. Hughes had worked as a heavy equipment oiler in the construction industry.

Survivors include a sister, Gwendolyn Hollingsworth of Spokane; a brother, Edwin Hughes of California; and numerous nieces and nephews.

James `J. Walt’ Davis Spokane

Memorial service for James Walter “J. Walt” Davis will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Heritage Funeral Home.

A 63-year Spokane resident, Mr. Davis died Sunday. He was 87.

He was born in Pullman and graduated from Washington State University in 1935.

Mr. Davis worked at Nelson Insurance Agency until he entered the Navy and served during World War II.

After the war, he returned to Spokane and started the Rusch and Davis Insurance Agency. He sold the agency in 1976.

Mr. Davis recently worked with Anthony, Baker and Burns.

He served on the board of the Deaconess and Valley Health Care Foundation, and Camp Fire Boys and Girls. He was the former president of Goodwill Industries.

Mr. Davis was a member of the downtown Kiwanis Club, the Marketeers Investment Club, Spokane Club, and the Knife and Fork Club. He also was a member of the Lutheran church.

Survivors include his wife, Clara; and a sister, Marian Bateman of Sun City, Ariz.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Deaconess and Valley Health Care Foundation or the Shriners Hospital For Children.

Mary Wood Deer Park

Private service for Mary Elizabeth Wood, 79, will be held in the spring. Burial will be at the Woodland Cemetery. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wood, who was born in Minot, N.D., died Friday.

She was a 72-year resident of Deer Park.

Mrs. Wood was a homemaker and a member of the Mormon church.

Her husband, Roscoe Wood, died in 1978.

Survivors include eight sons, Charles, David and Joseph Wallin, and William Wood, all of Deer Park, Jesse Wallin of Newport, Wash., Claude Hutchins of Troy, Idaho, Edward Wallin of Mount Lake Terrace, Wash., and Edgar Wallin of Libby, Mont.; four daughters, Dorothy McCracken of Spokane, Donna Clough and Juanita Stillman, both of Deer Park, and Mary Zickeffoose of Dayton, Wash.; three stepsons, Jack Wood of Spokane, Robert Wood of Reardan, Wash., and LeRoy Wood of Marysville, Calif.; four stepdaughters, Patti Steffenhagen and Opal Davis, both of Reardan, Kitty Spalding of Ione, Wash., and Freda Boyd of Twenty-Nine Palms, Calif.; a sister, Josephine Wren of Deer Park; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gloria Harrison Spokane

Memorial service for Gloria E. Harrison, 69, was held Monday at Northview Bible Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Harrison, who was born in Crosby, Minn., died Wednesday.

Her family moved to Spokane when she was a child. She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School.

Mrs. Harrison moved back to Spokane in 1967 and worked as an office clerk in the medical industry.

Survivors include three daughters, Charlene Stetson, Eileen Updike and Laurene Kana; a sister, Margaret Patch of Kelliher, Minn.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
