David Peterson Coeur d’Alene

Private service for David Lloyd Peterson, 29, will be held later. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Peterson, who was born in Moscow, Idaho, died Saturday.

He was a resident of the Idaho State School and Hospital in Nampa, Idaho, for 24 years before moving to Coeur d’Alene.

Survivors include his parents, Dennis and Kathy Peterson of Lewiston; and two sisters, Kelly Kiser of Troy, Ohio, and Debra Baerlocher of Lewiston.

Walter Maki Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Memorial for Walter Erick “Walt” Maki, 89, was Monday at Bonners Ferry Funeral Home.

Mr. Maki, who was born in Kaljoke, Finland, died Dec. 30.

He immigrated to America with his family in 1912 and grew up in Springdale, Wash. He graduated from high school in Springdale and later attended Washington State University for one year.

Mr. Maki moved to Coeur d’Alene and worked for Montgomery Ward before moving to Ephrata, Wash., where he worked for Standard Oil Co. In 1937 he married Georgina Ekstrom. They later divorced.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and later moved to Coeur d’Alene, where he continued to work for Standard Oil Co.

Mr. Maki moved to Bonners Ferry in 1948 and purchased Boundary Hardware Co., which he continued to operate until last Christmas Eve.

He was a former member of the Coeur d’Alene Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge and Lions Club.

Survivors include two sons, Chuck Maki of Edmonds, Wash., and Steve Maki of Moscow, Idaho; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Bernice `Bee’ McEachran Spokane

Service for Bernice J. “Bee” McEachran, 91, will be at 11 a.m. Friday in All Saints Chapel at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Ellensburg, Wash., Mrs. McEachran died Dec. 6.

She graduated from high school in Toppenish, Wash., and moved to Spokane.

She worked at The Crescent department store until 1930, when she married Donald McEachran.

Mrs. McEachran and her husband lived in Bremerton, Seattle and Great Falls, Mont., and moved back to Spokane in 1939.

She was a member of the Women of Rotary, High View Garden Club, Spokane Club and the Manito Golf and Country Club.

Her husband died in July.

Survivors include two sons, Douglas and Dennis McEachran; a daughter, Jane Conlin; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Altar Guild of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

Gary Myers Spokane

Funeral Mass for Gary A. Myers, 62, was Monday at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church. Private inurnment was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Myers died Dec. 29.

He graduated from the University of Notre Dame and was a Realtor in Spokane for more than 40 years.

He was a member of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Spokane Board of Realtors, Washington Association of Realtors, North Spokane Lions Club and the Spokane Country Club.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Jane; a son, Michael Myers of Spokane; two daughters, Molly Myers of Seattle and Colleen Goodwin of Kirkland, Wash.; his parents, Charles and Gladys Myers of Spokane; two brothers, Ronald and David Myers; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gonzaga Preparatory School.

Ella (Willms) Price Spokane

Visitation for Ella N. (Willms) Solverson Price, 90, will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Price, who was born in Espanola, Wash., died Friday.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Sinto Senior Center, Eagles Lodge, American Legion Auxiliary and Messiah Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Solverson of Nine Mile Falls and Glenn Solverson of Spokane; a daughter, Joan Roads; a brother, Albert Willms of Medical Lake; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to Messiah Lutheran Church.

Carl Dahl Coeur d’Alene

Service for Carl Einar Dahl, 84, will be today at 1 p.m. at Sandpoint First Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Sandpoint. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dahl, who was born in Ontario, Canada, died Friday.

He moved to the Sandpoint area in 1922 and attended Bonner County schools. He later joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and also worked for the U.S. Forest Service for two summers.

Mr. Dahle married Agnes Erickson in 1941. He moved to Seattle and worked as a welder in the shipyards in Bremerton, Wash. In 1945 he moved back to the Sandpoint area, settling in the Selle area.

He lived on a small ranch and worked at various mechanic and welding jobs for Bonner County, Shaffer-Hitchcock and Joslyn Pole companies, and Co-op Gas and Supply.

Mr. Dahl retired in 1977 and spent several winters in Arizona. He was a member of the Sandpoint First Lutheran Church and Sandpoint Elks Lodge. He also was a 50-year member of the Selle Grange.

He later moved to Coeur d’Alene.

Survivors include his wife of more than 58 years, Agnes; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or First Lutheran Church in Sandpoint.

Helen Lawrence Potlatch, Idaho

Funeral Mass for Helen Lawrence will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Potlatch. Burial will follow at the Potlatch City Cemetery. Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Born in South Bend, Ind., Mrs. Lawrence died Thursday.

She worked for Bendix Brake Co. in South Bend.

She married Andrew Lawrence in 1933 and they moved to Potlatch in 1941.

Mrs. Lawrence was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

Her husband died in 1992.

Survivors include a son, Andrew Lawrence of Potlatch; a daughter, Delores Lawrence of Post Falls; a sister, Rose Borke of South Bend; a granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.

William `Doc’ Howard Smelterville, Idaho

Memorial service for William Thomas “Doc” Howard, 66, will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel. A gathering for family and friends will follow at the Kings Inn in Kingston, Idaho.

Mr. Howard, who was born in Hansen, Idaho, near Twin Falls, died Friday.

He received a doctorate from the Metropolitan Collegiate Institute of Science in London, England, and later served as an instructor of electrohydraulic mechanical engineering at various colleges. He also was a selfemployed heavy equipment diesel mechanic.

Mr. Howard lived in Utah before moving to the Silver Valley in 1975.

Survivors include a son, Shane Howard of Pinehurst, Idaho; three stepdaughters, Deonne Hill of Spokane, and Denise Hanson and Chris Vlastelic, both of Kingston; his mother, Mildred Howard of Hansen; a brother, Don Howard of Ketchikan, Alaska; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Ralph Mader Spokane

Service for Ralph J. Mader, 88, will be at 3 p.m. today in the chapel at Holy Cross Cemetery. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Chokio, Minn., Mr. Mader died Dec. 22.

He was self-employed in the sheet metal business in Lewiston and Spokane.

Mr. Mader moved to Lewiston in 1949 and then to Spokane in 1968.

His wife, Alice, died in 1999.

Survivors include two daughters, Alita White of Spirit Lake, Idaho, and Shirley Jones of Juneau, Alaska; two sons, Kris Mader of Spokane and Curtis Mader of Salem, Ore.; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Gordon Peterson Spokane

Private memorial service will be held for Gordon L. Peterson, 63. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Peterson died Friday.

He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1952 and later was a self-employed truck driver.

He was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 6.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene; a daughter, Julie Russell; three stepdaughters, Becky, Barbara and Leona; three sisters, Hazel Evans, Joyce Bjordahl and Donna Fraley; two brothers, Lowell and Wayne Peterson; and a granddaughter.

Tyrell Malatare Sagle, Idaho

Memorial service for Tyrell Jason Malatare, 19, will be held today at 2 p.m. at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint.

Mr. Malatare, who was born in Helena, Mont., died Saturday. He attended school in Helena before moving to Sandpoint in 1992. He graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1998 and was a member of the state championship football team and the school band.

Mr. Malatare had worked at Safeway in Sandpoint and also installed telephone cable and was a former Boy Scout.

He was attending North Idaho College at the time of his death.

Survivors include his mother and father, Janet Nelson of Emira, Idaho, and Ray Malatare of Helena; three sisters, Marnie Lewis of Wyoming, and Amber Gill and Heather Malatare, both of Montana; grandparents, Larry and Marnie Higgins of Elmira, and Alma Fraley of Montana; his great-grandmother, Alice Higgins of Bonners Ferry; and numerous nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Alma Volz Spokane

No service will be held for Alma Yvetta Vasey Volz, 80, at her request. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Volz, who was born in Philadelphia, died Dec. 25.

She moved to Spokane in 1962 and worked as a cashier in a bookstore.

Her husband, Maurice Vasey, died in 1949.

Survivors include three sons, Steve Volz of Spokane, Frank Volz of Mead and Robert Volz of Spirit Lake, Idaho; a brother, Frank Cooper of Trevose, Pa.; a grandson and two great-grandchildren.

Mary (Albin) Shaw Tekoa, Wash.

Service for Mary Jewel (Albin) Shaw will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at United Church of Tekoa. Burial will follow at Goldenrod Cemetery in Tekoa. Kramer Funeral Home in Tekoa is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Coal, Mo., Mrs. Shaw died Sunday. She was 101.

Her family moved to Davenport, Wash., when she was 5, and she graduated valedictorian from Davenport High School.

Mrs. Shaw worked as a clerk in the Lincoln County Auditor’s Officer until she married Roy Shaw in 1918.

They moved to Tensed, Idaho, in 1919 to farm, and moved to DeSmet, Idaho, in 1931.

She moved to Kennewick in 1947 and worked as a secretary for a fruit packing company.

In 1950 she moved back to Tekoa and worked at the Tekoa Medical Center for 12 years. In 1962 she worked for Gritman Medical Center in Moscow, Idaho, until she retired.

Mrs. Shaw moved back to Kennewick and returned to Tekoa in 1983.

She was a member of the Tekoa Christian Church where she also was a member of the choir.

Her husband died in 1944.

Survivors include a son, Eldon Shaw of DeSmet; three granddaughters; two foster grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Jean Clear Gifford, Wash.

Memorial service for Jean A. Clear, 67, was Sunday at the Douglas Falls Park near Colville, Wash.

Born in Bartlesville, Okla., Mrs. Clear died Friday.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Gifford for 20 years.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Ray; two sons, Curtis Clear of Gifford and Rodger Clear of Lynnwood, Wash.; two daughters, Chrystal Walsh of Lynnwood and Rebecca Forte of Denton, Texas; her mother, BoBo Patterson of Rice, Wash.; three brothers, Don Patterson of San Diego, and Jerry and Curtis Patterson, both of Rice; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Bessie Prosser Spokane

Service for Bessie E. Prosser, 70, will be at 2 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Prosser, who was born in Harrington, Wash., died Saturday.

She was a 50-year Spokane resident and worked at a restaurant.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Dan and Greg Curtis, both of Gilbert, Ariz.; a daughter, Debbie Matthews of Kent, Wash.; five brothers and four sisters; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

E. Leona Patzer Coeur d’Alene

Service for E. Leona Patzer, 74, will be today at 10 a.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene with burial to follow at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Patzer, who was born in Carlin Bay, Idaho, died Friday.

A lifelong area resident, she married Robert Patzer in 1941. She worked as a cook at cafes in Coeur d’Alene during the 1950s.

In the mid-1960s, Mrs. Patzer began a career with Clare Pendar, which later became General Instruments. She retired in 1984.

After her retirement she operated The Cake Carousel business from her home for seven years.

Her husband died in 1984.

Survivors include three daughters, Janet Fristoe of Medford, Ore., Sharon Erickson of Coeur d’Alene and Cristie Rudie of Logan, Utah; two sisters, Louella Lovell of Texas and Lela Moreau of Coeur d’Alene; a brother, George Browning of Coeur d’Alene; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Fred `Max’ Maksimenko Palouse, Wash.

Memorial service for Fred A. “Max” Maksimenko, 89, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Palouse Federated Church. Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Karapischi, Ukraine, Mr. Maksimenko died Thursday.

In 1924 his family immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island and then moved to Spokane.

Mr. Maksimenko graduated from Lewis and Clark High School.

During World War II, he worked at Fairchild Air Force Base in the Armament Division.

He later attended the National Institute of Dry Cleaning in Silver Spring, Md.

Mr. Maksimenko married Dorothy Diamond in 1941.

He moved back to Spokane and worked for Paris Cleaners for more than 27 years. He retired in 1975 as superintendent of Paris Dry Cleaners.

In 1975 Mr. Maksimenko moved to Umatilla, Ore., and worked as a groundskeeper for the McNary Management Co. until 1983 when he moved to Palouse.

He was a member of Palouse Federated Church and the Palouse Senior Citizen.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Judy Willcox of Palouse; a stepdaughter, Christina Cobb of Ephrata, Wash.; 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Frances Salla Spokane

Funeral Mass for Frances Arlene Salla, 85, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Otis Orchards. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Fairfield, Mrs. Salla died Saturday.

She and her husband, Sam, were longtime residents and business owners of a tavern in Avery, Idaho. They retired and moved to Spokane in 1972.

Mrs. Salla was a member of St. Joseph’s Church.

Her husband died in 1974.

Survivors include a daughter, Gladys Carlsen of Spokane; a brother, Lee Blakely of Bothell, Wash.; three grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Charles Schmidt Spokane

Service for Charles Schmidt, 82, was Sunday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Schmidt died Dec. 29.

He worked as a truck driver and was a member of the Crossroads Coffee Club.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Irene; a son, Charlie Schimdt of Spokane; three daughters, Marlene Little of Phoenix, Marie Larsen of Spokane and Charlotte Ferrante of Medical Lake; two brothers, Benny Weremiczyk and Joe Schmidt, both of Spokane; a sister, Helen Montgomery of Lynnwood, Wash.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
