William B. Bantz Spokane
Memorial service for William B. Bantz, 81, will be today at 3 p.m. at Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bantz, who was born in Coupeville, Wash., died Friday. He had been a Spokane resident for more than 50 years.
Mr. Bantz was a graduate of Washington State University, where he played football and was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity.
He later served in the Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II and concluded his service after four years with the rank of major.
Mr. Bantz attended the University of Washington and Gonzaga University Law schools, earning his law degree from Gonzaga. He was the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington from 1953 to 1958, and in 1958 ran for the U.S. Senate as a Republican against Henry Jackson.
He later returned to private practice in Spokane.
He was a past president of the Spokane County Bar Association and was recently honored by the Washington State Bar Association as a 50-year member.
Mr. Bantz served on the Mead School District board of directors for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Alene; two children, Mark and Alison Bantz, both of Spokane; a sister, Marguerite Spurgeon of Olympia; and five grandchildren.

Don H. Worthington Spokane
Memorial service for Don H. Worthington, 79, will be today at 3 p.m. at Foothills Community Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime resident of Spokane, Mr. Worthington died Friday.
He graduated from West Valley High School and attended Eastern Washigton University.
In 1941 Mr. Worthington married Joyce Davis.
He served as a sergeant with the 5th Army Signal Corp. and received five Battle Stars for his involvment in North Africa and Italy.
After three and a half years of service he returned home and worked for the Northwest Bell Telephone Co. for 36 years.
His wife died in 1987. In 1989 he married Cricket Roberts.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Sandy Davis and Connie Myall; a son, Nick Worthington; two stepchildren, David Stickler and Karen Gardinier; two sisters, Ellie and Janet; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

DeEtte `Betty’ Dahl Hayden, Idaho
Service for DeEtte “Betty” Dahl, 78, was held Tuesday at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Burial followed at Riverview Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.
Mrs. Dahl, who was born in Kearney, Neb., died Thursday.
She moved to the Pullman area and graduated from Pullman High School. She also graduated from the University of Idaho with a bachelor’s degree in English.
Mrs. Dahl moved to Coeur d’Alene and in 1946 married Edwin Hall. She began a career as a kindergarten teacher, serving as an educator for 20 years.
She and her husband moved to Hayden in 1979.
Mrs. Dahl was a member of Community United Methodist Church in Coeur d’Alene, and was a member and past president of the American Association of University Women’s local chapter.
Mrs. Dahl was involved in gardening and genealogy.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years; three daughters, Candace Thompson of Marysville, Wash., Stephanie Wallace of Spokane and Leslie Koep of Richland; a brother, Dale Worley of Coeur d’Alene; a sister, Helen Williams of California; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Roger K. Hole Spokane
Memorial service for Roger K. Hole, 45, will be at 11:30 a.m. today at Community Bible Chapel. Ball and Dodd-South is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Butte, Mont., Mr. Hole died Saturday.
He had been a resident of Spokane for 25 years, and worked in construction.
Survivors include a daughter, Micayla Bonner of Spokane; three brothers, Robert and Donald Hole, both of Montana, and Ray Hole of Alaska; four sisters, Shirley Fowler and Betsy Hunt, both of Montana, Myra Kraemer of Arizona and Donna Hole of Alaska.

Richard Brown Sandpoint
Service for Richard L. “Dick” Brown, 69, will be today at 11 a.m. at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint. Burial will be at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Sandpoint.
Mr. Brown, who was born in Sandpoint, died Thursday.
He graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1948 and joined the Army. He served in Korea with the 24th Infantry Division.
Mr. Brown returned to Sandpoint and married Patricia Hawkins in 1952.
He worked for the Pack River Lumber Co. and began a career as a planer operator in 1965. He had worked in planer mills at WI Forest Products in Dover, Idaho, and Northwest Timber Co. in Coeur d’Alene before retiring in 1992.
Mr. Brown was a former member of the Sandpoint Elks Lodge, Oden Grange and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He had served as president of the Hawkins Road Association for many years and was instrumental in the construction of the Sunnyside Water Association.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Patricia; three children, Roger Brown of Sandpoint, Debra Scribner of Priest River, Idaho, and Susan Beltran of California; his mother, Hilda VanSchranvendyk of Sandpoint; two sisters, Carole Mitton of Sandpoint and Kathy Conway of New York City; a brother, Robert Brown of Kootenai; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Georgianna L. (Martin) Mittelstadt Spokane
No service will be held for Georgianna L. (Martin) Mittelstadt, 81, at her request. Spokane Cremation and Burial Service is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Spokane, Mrs. Mittelstadt died Monday.
She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and attended Stanford University. She worked as a legal secretary for the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad and later in the Spokane offices of the late Sen. Clarence C. Dill.
In 1950 she married Eldred Keith Mittelstadt.
She was the treasurer for the Spokane Bicycle Club and led weekly rides. She bicycled in Australia and Europe and at the age of 68 rode cross-country from Seattle to Boston.
Mrs. Mittelstadt is survived by her son Robert Mittelstadt of Spokane and her nephew Stephen Martin of Sierra Madre, Calif.
Charles T. Baker Spokane
Funeral for Charles T. “Charly” Baker, 81, will be today at 1 p.m. at Riplinger Funeral Home.
Mr. Baker, who was born in Gassaway, W.Va., died Friday. He had been a resident of Spokane for 55 years.
He was a World War II veteran and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1474.
Mr. Baker is survived by his wife Lucille Baker; two daughters, Alice Andress of Houston and Charlene Pierce of Texarkana, Texas; three sons, Charles and Robin Baker, both of Spokane, and Thomas Baker of Arkansas; a stepdaughter, Terry Edwards of Spokane; a brother, Robert Baker of Deer Park; a sister Betty Nezko of Melbourne, Fla.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to an animal shelter of one’s choice.
Burton Block Coeur d’Alene
Burial for Burton Stanley Block, 74, will be held at a later date in Cozad Community Cemetery in Cozad, Neb. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of local arrangements.
Mr. Block, who was born in Gothenburg, Neb., died Sunday.
He grew up in Cozad and graduated from high school there.
He enlisted in the Navy and served for three years during World War II.
Mr. Block graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1950 with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering, and worked overseas as a civil engineer in construction from 1959 to 1981.
He married Moria MacGeagh in 1963 and they moved to Boulder in 1981.
He retired to Coeur d’Alene in 1983.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jeff Block of Coeur d’Alene, Stanley Block of California and Bradley Block of Texas; a brother, Curtis Block of Nebraska; three sisters, LaVawn Burden of Nebraska, Beverly Jensen of Colorado and Gloria Tye of Arizona; and two grandchildren.
William F. Freeman Spokane
Funeral for William F. “Bill” Freeman, 84, will be today at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
A 40-year Spokane resident, Mr. Freeman died Friday.
Born in Brightview, Alberta, he was a farmer and logger with his father in Canada before moving to the United States.
Mr. Freeman moved to Spokane in 1960 and married Zeta Marriott. He worked as a steamplant engineer for St. Luke’s Hospital.
His wife died in 1990. Mr. Freeman is survived by two daughters; Billie Lewis of Spokane and Pattie Durheim of Nine Mile Falls; a son, Robert Freeman of Moorpark, Calif.; two sisters, Elsie Erickson and Margie Sauve, both of Edmonton, Alberta; and five grandchildren.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Washington Old Time Fiddlers Association.

Mabel Manfred Spokane
An informal gathering for Mabel Manfred, 71, will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. at the home of Tom and Val Manfred. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Manfred, a lifelong resident of Spokane, died Saturday.
She was a homemaker, taught ceramics and later worked in retail for Skaggs Payless.
Mrs. Manfred was a Patron member of the Eagles Lodge.
She is survived by two sons; Tom Manfred of Liberty Lake and Keith Manfred of San Diego; two brothers, Fred Ward of Spokane and John Ward of Eureka, Mont.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Marjorie E. Smith Greenacres
Funeral for Marjorie E. Smith, 95, will be at 11 a.m. today in the Pines Cemetery Mausoleum. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Smith, who was born in Porthill, Idaho, died Friday.
She was a 56-year resident of Spokane and was a homemaker.
Her husband of 56 years, Fred J. Smith, died in 1989.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her son, Blake Smith of Greenacres; four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Inez Winegar Moscow, Idaho
Visitation for Inez Elise Winegar, 91, will be today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Service will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Moscow.
Mrs. Winegar, who was born on the family homestead near Moscow, died Sunday.
She attended the rural Fern Dell School, Ursuline Academy and Moscow High School.
She married Charles “Mert” Winegar in 1929, and they owned University Pharmacy in Moscow for more than 40 years.
The couple established the C. Merton and Inez Winegar Scholarship Endowment at the University of Idaho in 1997. She served on the Guardian Council of the local chapter of the International Chapter of Jobs Daughters and also held various positions in the Ruby Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
Mrs. Winegar also was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Molina, and a sister, Pearl Nelson, both of Moscow; a brother, Conrad Kilmarnock of Virginia; and three grandchildren.

Doryce `Buggs’ Desjarlais Coeur d’Alene
Service for Doryce Helen “Buggs” Desjarlais, 72, will be today at 3 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene.
Mrs. Desjarlais, who was born in Browning, Mont., died Saturday.
She grew up in Browning and Rocky Boy, Mont., and was an enrolled tribal member of the Chippewa Cree Tribe. She was the first female tribal member to graduate from Flandreau High School in South Dakota She later attended Chemewa Indian School in Oregon and worked in several government jobs before marrying John Desjarlais.
She lived in Spokane from 1973 until 1977, when she moved to the Coeur d’Alene area. She was involved with the cultural art of oral presentation and storytelling.
Mrs. Desjarlais was preceded in death by her husband.
Survivors include three sons, Grinelle “Buzz” Desjarlais of Spokane, and Anthony and Pat Desjarlais, both of Post Falls; four daughters, Gwen Hill of Sisseton, S.D., Leona Flowers of Hood River, Ore., and Jessie Desjarlais and Dee Dee Whitt, both of Spokane; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Elaine Sutton Coeur d’Alene
Funeral Mass for Elaine Kamps Sutton, 79, will be today at 1 p.m. at St. Pius Roman Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will be at St. Thomas Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.
Mrs. Sutton, who was born in Spokane, died Saturday.
She grew up in Spokane and later married Richard Sutton. The couple settled in Post Falls.
Her husband died in 1952.
She married John Kamps in 1956; he died in 1981.
Mrs. Sutton was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church.
Survivors include four sons, Bill Sutton, and Jim and Mike Kamps, all of Post Falls, and Jerry Sutton of Spokane; a daughter, Peggy Howe of Coeur d’Alene; two sisters, Lorraine Kamps of Post Falls and Dodie Mikler of Spokane; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Hugh Morgan Coeur d’Alene
Memorial service for Hugh Morgan, 93, will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church in Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Morgan, who was born in Arkansas, died Jan. 12.
He grew up and graduated from high school in Arkansas in 1925 and attended Ozark College in Clarksville, Ark., for two years.
Mr. Morgan moved to California and in 1931 married Irene Hulbert. He worked for A&P Tea Co. for 20 years.
He moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1949 and started Panhandle Roofing Co., which he operated until retiring in 1970.
His wife died in 1987.
Mr. Morgan was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Elks Lodge and a charter member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Richard Morgan of Hayden Lake, Idaho; two sisters, Frankie Maudine Bryan of Coeur d’Alene and Nellie May Reaves of Arkansas; six grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
