Donald Samuelson Sandpoint

Service for former Idaho Gov. Donald W. Samuelson, 86, will be today at 1 p.m. at the Sandpoint First Lutheran Church. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Samuelson, also a former Idaho state senator, died Thursday.

He was born in Woodhull, Ill., and attended Knox College in Galesburg, Ill. Mr. Samuelson briefly lived in Florida and worked for an uncle before marrying Ruby Mayo in 1936.

Mr. Samuelson joined the Navy in 1944 and served as a gunner’s mate at Farragut Naval Training Station in Bayview during World War II.

He later moved to the Sandpoint area, where the couple opened the Pend Oreille Sport Shop.

Mr. Samuelson sold the sport shop in 1960 and opened Don Samuelson Equipment Co. He was elected as a state senator from Bonner County that same year.

He served in the Senate until he was elected governor in 1966. He served until 1971 and then was appointed as the regional director of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Northwest Regional Office in Seattle.

The couple retired to their Sandpoint home in 1976 and maintained a cabin on Lake Pend Oreille.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Ruby; a daughter, Donna Collins of Renton, Wash.; a son, Steve Samuelson of Boise; a sister, Aileen Litton of Illinois; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Bonner County Historical Society and Museum, Ella and Ontario Streets, or the United Methodist Church, 711 Main St., both of Sandpoint.

Jean `Cass’ Roberts Sandpoint

Service for Jean A. “Cass” Roberts, 47, will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint.

Ms. Roberts, who was born in Yreka, Calif., died Jan. 20 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Careywood, Idaho.

She graduated with honors from Portland Adventist Academy high school in Oregon and later attended Walla Walla College.

She moved to the Sandpoint area in 1993 and worked at Coldwater Creek, and was active in poetry and music.

Survivors include her daughter, Julianna Roberts; and five sisters, Pat Fuchs of Port Charlotte, Fla., Joy Walker of Vancouver, Wash., Linda Hill of Temple Hills, Md., Tammy Dudley of Medical Lake and Dene Moodie of Spokane.

Harry Johnson Elk River, Idaho

Memorial service for Harry J. Johnson, 78, will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at Wood’s Western Pleasure Guest Ranch north of Sandpoint.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in Sandpoint, died Dec. 12. Memorial services were held in Nevada.

He grew up in the Oden area near Sandpoint and graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1939.

He then worked at the Co-op Creamery until serving with the Army Air Corps during World War II.

In 1946 Mr. Johnson received his military discharge and married Anita Wood They moved to Spokane, and he worked as a dairy inspector.

Mr. Johnson and his wife moved to Beatty, Nev., and owned the El Portal Motel until retiring to their summer home in Elk River, Idaho.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Rick Johnson of Beatty and Randy Johnson of Elk River; a daughter, Michelle Marcom of Reno, Nev.; four brothers, Arthur Johnson of Chicago, and Herbert, Robert and Donald Johnson, all of Sandpoint; two sisters, Ethel Whalen of Sandpoint and Betty Csorosoz of Missoula; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Luella Holien Spokane

No service will be held for Luella R. Holien, 89, at her request. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Holien, who died Friday, was born in Jump Off Joe, Wash.

She graduated in 1929 from Jenkins High School in Chewelah, and was named Miss Chewelah in 1930.

In 1938 she moved to Sandpoint and in 1939 married Henry Holien. They co-owned Helphrey Motor Freight in Spokane and Merchant Transfer and Storage in Sandpoint.

Her husband died in 1982 and she moved to Spokane in 1990.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 34 in Sandpoint.

Survivors include two daughters, Anna Kalhar of Spokane and Merrilee Busacker of Pocatello, Idaho; a sister, Kathryne Ewing of Scappoose, Ore.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Marvin Vogt Pullman

Memorial service for Marvin R. Vogt, 86, will be at 2 p.m. today at Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Pullman. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Vogt, who was born in Orrick, Mo., died Friday.

After he graduated from high school in 1936, he moved to Palouse, Wash., and worked during harvest. He later worked as a meat cutter in Spokane and then as a meat market manager in Pendleton, Ore.

He served in the Army during World War II. He was stationed at Fort McClellan, Ala., where he managed the Officers Club and was a staff sergeant.

Mr. Vogt married Margaret McClasey in 1943, and they moved to Pullman after his discharge from the Army.

He worked as a meat cutter at Lane’s Grocery.

In 1950 Mr. Vogt and his wife purchased the Cougar Market, which they operated for eight years.

Mr. Vogt worked as the supervisor for the store rooms in the chemistry department at Washington State University from 1959 to 1978.

He was a member of Pullman Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife; and two sisters, Amelia Harmon of San Mateo, Calif., and Martha Slater of Pawnee City, Neb.

James Mallicoat Spokane

Memorial service for James L. “Jim” Mallicoat, 66, will be at 2 p.m. today at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Private burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 29-year Spokane resident, Mr. Mallicoat died Sunday. He was born in Springfield, Mo.

He worked as an electrical diagnostic troubleshooter for the aerospace industry.

He was a member of Eagles Aerie 2, Mountain Musicians and Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Myrna; two sons, James and Ken Mallicoat; a stepson, Gary Lee; two stepdaughters, Susan Lundberg and Jennifer Tevlin; four brothers, John Mallicoat of Spokane, David Dalton of Yakima, Stanley Dalton of Arkansas and Bob Mallicoat of California; four grandchildren and 11 stepgrandchildren.

Larry Powell Medical Lake

Service for Larry N. Powell, 52, was Saturday at Lake City Assembly of God Church in Medical Lake. Burial was at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Powell, who was born in Houston, Ark., died Jan. 18.

He graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1966 and served in the Navy during the Vietnam War.

He lived in Spokane from 1974 to 1980. He moved back to Spokane in 1991. Mr. Powell worked as a truck driver.

Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Connie; a daughter, Andrea Wilson of Spokane; a stepdaughter, Pamela Villacres of Wenatchee; his parents, Fulton and Virginia Powell of Medical Lake; a brother, Roy Powell of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Branetta Smith of Spokane and Trish Salisbury of Japan; his grandmother, Helen Spurgeon of Cheney; and four grandchildren.

Nadine Saiz Spokane

Memorial service for Nadine M. Saiz, 60, was Monday at Riplinger Funeral Home.

A 31-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Saiz died Thursday. She was born in Odessa, Wash.

She graduated from Rogers High School.

Mrs. Saiz was a homemaker and a member of the Eagles Lodge Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Frank; three daughters, Patty, Paula and Billi Jo; a stepson, Dwain; her mother, Pat Lesser of Newport, Wash.; a sister, Jan; 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Peggy Peltier Spokane

Memorial service for Peggy L. Peltier, 74, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Peltier, who was born in Wellington, Kan., died Friday.

She was a 50-year Spokane resident and a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Greg Reimer of Veradale; a sister, Asenath Jacobs of Lynnwood, Wash.; and two grandsons.

Malva Peterson Moscow, Idaho

Service for Malva Evelina (Thompson) Peterson, 91, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at the Alberton (Mont.) Community Church. Burial will follow at the Thompson Family Cemetery in Alberton. Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Alberton, Mrs. Peterson died Saturday.

She graduated from Alberton High School in 1929 and married Emmett Peterson in 1930.

She and her husband lived in Deer Lodge, Butte, Alberton, Missoula and Harlowtown, Mont., and Avery, Idaho. They moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1971 and to Moscow in 1998 to be near her daughter.

Mrs. Peterson was a homemaker and a member of Coeur d’Alene Bible Church.

Survivors include her husband in Coeur d’Alene; two daughters, Diana Krebs of Potlatch, Idaho, and Blanche Peterson of Alberton; a brother, Samuel Thompson of Belgrade, Mont.; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Carl Deming Post Falls

Memorial Service for Carl Bruce Deming, 68, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls.

Mr. Deming, who was born in Rapid City, S.D., died Thursday.

He graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1951 and served with Air Force until 1955.

Mr. Deming married Anna Gertrude Kachel in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1955. They settled in Coeur d’Alene.

He lived out of the area from 1956 until 1961 while working for Boeing in the Bomarc Missile Program. He then moved to Post Falls and worked for his father at Deming Machine and Supply Co. in Coeur d’Alene. Mr. Deming retired from the business, which became Deming Industries, as president and general manager in 1995. His son, Michael, became president.

He was a member of the American Electroplaters Society, The Handyman’s Club of America, American Modelers Association, and Post Falls Flyers and Miniature Aircraft Association.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Curtis Deming of Hayden Lake, Idaho, Jeffrey Deming of Post Falls and Michael Deming of Coeur d’Alene; a daughter, Carla Ann Deming of Spokane; a brother, Harold Deming of Coeur d’Alene; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Donna (Gentry) Porta Spokane

Memorial service for Donna M. (Gentry) Porta, 63, was held Tuesday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North.

Mrs. Porta, who was born in Colfax, Wash., died Thursday.

She was a 60-year Spokane resident and in 1955 graduated from Rogers High school.

In 1969 she married Ed Porta.

Mrs. Porta was a homemaker and a member of the Chattaroy Neighborhood Pinochle Club.

Survivors include her husband; four sons, Robert, David, Mike and Jerry Porta, all of Spokane; two daughters, Wendy Rohrbach of Cheney and Margie Bradfute of Fort Worth, Texas; a brother, Lloyd Fisher of Kellogg; 15 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Lloyd Shadwick Athol, Idaho

Service for Lloyd Chester Shadwick, 75, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Coeur d’Alene Bible Church. Burial will follow at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Shadwick, who was born in San Fernando, Calif., died Thursday.

He grew up in Southern California and served with the Army during World War II.

After his military service, Mr. Shadwick attended San Bernardino Valley College and San Jose State College.

He married Adrienne “Lou” Linke in 1950.

He began a career as a utility engineer in San Bernardino and Hesperia, Calif. He retired and moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1989.

He was a member of Coeur d’Alene Bible Church and was involved with youth work. He also was involved with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Mounted Rescue Posse.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Scott Shadwick of Athol; a daughter, Jodee Stratton of Coeur d’Alene; a brother, Gilbert Shadwick of Coeur d’Alene; and two sisters, Glenda Brunmier of North Carolina, and Myrtle Andersen of California.

Oscar Pasley Kennewick

Service for Oscar W. Pasley, 81, will be at 11 a.m. today at Danekas Funeral Chapel in Ritzville, Wash. Burial will follow at the Delight Cemetery near Lind, Wash.

Mr. Pasley, who was born in Portland, died Saturday.

His family moved to the Lind and Sandhills area in 1933.

He graduated from Lind High School, and worked as a farmer in the Lind and Sandhills area.

He moved to Kennewick two years ago.

Mr. Pasley was a member of the Kahlotus (Wash.) Community Church, Sandhills Grange, American Rifle Association and the Washington Association of Wheat Growers.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Ester; a son, Richard Pasley of Lind; three daughters, Jacqueline Paslay of Earville, Ill., Judi Bickum of Sacramento, Calif., and Patricia Mosbrucker of Kahlotus; several foster children; a brother, William Pasley of Kennewick; a sister, Ercel McKibbin of Richland; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Viola Nailor Coeur d’Alene

No service will be held for Viola May Nailor, 76. English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Nailor, who was born in Oroville, Wash., died Sunday.

She married Harry Leavell in 1956, and the couple lived in Oroville. He preceded her in death.

She married Frank Nailor in 1966 and continued to reside in Oroville, where she was a homemaker. Her husband preceded her in death.

Mrs. Nailor moved to the Coeur d’Alene area in 1984.

Survivors include a sister, Betty Stebbins of Post Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
