Kenneth Johnson Smelterville, Idaho

Memorial service for Kenneth Matthew Johnson, 78, will be held today at 2 p.m. at Wardner Masonic Lodge in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg was in charge of cremation.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in Kellogg, died Saturday.

He grew up in the Silver Valley and graduated from Kellogg High School before serving with the Navy aboard the USS Hancock during World War II.

Mr. Johnson married Maxine Wallendar in 1946 and worked as a lead burner at the Bunker Hill Mining Co., for 32 years. He retired in 1981.

He was a member of the Wardner Masons, where he had served as master and district deputy. He was a member of the Osburn Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Johnson was a member of the Bunker Hill 20-Year Club and United Church of Kellogg. He was involved in gardening, horseback riding and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine; a son, Bob Johnson of Smelterville; three daughters, Vicki Mitchell, Bonnie Johnson and Sue Clapp, all of Kellogg; four sisters, Margarete McCarthy of Lakewood, Calif., Helen Luomas of Weiser, Idaho, Geraldine Draper of Seattle and Vivian Justis of Eugene, Ore.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Gladyce Ducommun St. Maries

Service for Gladyce M. Ducommun, 76, will be today at 11 a.m. at St. Maries Community Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mrs. Ducommun, who was born in Staples, Minn., died Friday.

She grew up and graduated from high school in Staples in 1942 and then moved to St. Maries while attending a Bible conference that same year.

Mrs. Ducommun worked as a telephone operator in St. Maries.

She graduated from the Northwest Nursing School in Minneapolis in 1944. The following year she married Wilfred Ducommun, and they lived in St. Maries. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Ducommun was a paint artist and gardener and was a member of Omega Gospel Hall in St. Maries.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Dennis Ducommun of Post Falls and Tim Ducommun of St. Maries; two daughters, Audra Brown and Karen Barber, both of California; four sisters, Eva Scheidecker of Charles City, Iowa, Clara Canner of Dunedin, Fla., Frances Grant of Kent, Wash., and Twyla Grover of Vancouver, Wash.; seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Frederick Tapper Silverton, Idaho

Graveside inurnment service for Frederick Joseph “Freddie” Tapper, 85, will be today at 1 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Tapper, who was born in Challis, Idaho, died Saturday.

He grew up in Shoshone County and had worked as a miner for various Silver Valley mines. In 1937 he married Beverly Calabretta.

His wife died in 1985.

Survivors include six grandchildren, Joe Margason of Silverton, Mike Margason of Kellogg, D.J. Marcy of Moscow, Idaho, and Walter Kalani Jr., Kristen Kalani and Gabriel Kalani, all of Phoenix; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg.

Frank Magrini Ontario, Ore.

Service for Frank Raymond Magrini, 74, was held Monday in Ontario with burial at Evergreen Cemetery in Ontario.

Mr. Magrini, who was born in Oak Park, Ill., died April 27.

He grew up in the Silver Valley and served three years with the Navy during World War II before graduating from Kellogg High School in 1947.

Mr. Magrini received a bachelor of arts degree in secondary education from Northern Idaho College of Education in Lewiston in 1951. He played college football and still holds the mile and two-mile track record at NICE.

He taught high school woodshop and coached athletics in Lapwai, Idaho, until 1957. He then taught woodshop and coached football at the Naval Air Station on Guam from 1957 to 1963.

Mr. Magrini settled in Ontario and taught woodshop and drafting and served as assistant football, basketball and junior varsity baseball coach at Ontario High School until retiring in 1987.

He was a member of the Ontario Elks Lodge and the Monarch Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Beth; two daughters, Peggy Pinkal of Council, Idaho, and Toni Simonds of Boise; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

James Funkhouser Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Memorial service for James W. Funkhouser, 70, will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Bonners Ferry United Methodist Church. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Funkhouser, who was born in Burns, Wyo., died Saturday.

He attended schools in Wyoming and Washington state before moving to Boundary County, where he graduated from Bonners Ferry High School in 1948.

Mr. Funkhouser married Elaine Wombacher in 1949.

He later worked for Safeway before joining the city of Bonners Ferry electrical department.

In the 1980s Mr. Funkhouser and his wife established an electrical contracting business, F & F Co.

Mr. Funkhouser was a longtime member of the Boundary County School Board and served as a volunteer with the local hospital, schools, visitors center and other community organizations.

He was preceded in death by his wife.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol Nelson of Oakland, Calif., and Donna Funkhouser of Bonners Ferry; a son, Dick Funkhouser of Bonners Ferry; a sister, Gloria Anderson of Eugene, Ore.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mary Strange Blanchard, Idaho

Private graveside inurnment for Mary Elizabeth Strange, 82, will be held at a later date at the Newport (Wash.) Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Strange, who was born in Boyds, Wash., died Thursday.

In the late 1930s her family moved to the Blanchard area where they farmed.

She married Arthur Strange in 1940 and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Strange had spent winters in Apache Junction, Ariz.

Her husband died in 1988.

Survivors include a son, Arthur Strange of Blanchard; two sisters, Lillian Smith of Spokane and Jen Crumpler of Athol, Idaho; a brother, Huck Fuller of Moses Lake; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Hulda Berds Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Service for Hulda Ann Berds, 89, will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the Bonners Ferry Funeral Home. Service and burial will take palce at a later date at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Lewiston, N.Y.

Mrs. Berds, who was born in Newfane, N.Y., died Saturday.

She grew up and received an education in New York. She married Carl Berds in 1927.

She lived most of her life in the Niagara Falls, N.Y., area and was a mother and homemaker.

Her husband died in 1964.

In 1996 Mrs. Berds moved to Bonners Ferry to be near family.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon O’Donnell of Bonners Ferry and Alberta Risley of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; a son, Robert Berds of Lewiston, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren.

Margaret Richmond Coeur d’Alene

No service will be held for Margaret L. Richmond, 88, at her request. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Richmond, who was born in Spokane, died Saturday.

She grew up and attended schools in the Wardner-Kellogg area. She later moved to Seattle, where she worked as a waitress.

She married Lloyd Rizzonelli in 1929. They later divorced.

She married Roy Richmond in 1941. He died in 1988.

Mrs. Richmond lived in Seattle for 60 years. In 1996 she moved back to North Idaho to be near family.

Survivors include a sister, Velma Rocks of Sandpoint; one grandson, Alan Rizzonelli of Seattle; two great-grandsons and two great-great-grandsons.

Pearl (Jeffers) Curtis Spokane

Memorial service for Pearl Abigail (Jeffers) Curtis, 80, will be at 1 p.m. today in the Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Clark Fork, Idaho, Mrs. Curtis died Friday.

She was a 75-year Spokane resident and a homemaker.

Her husband of 60 years, Carl, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Kurz of Spokane; two sons, Guy and Carl Curtis, both of Spokane; a brother, Eldon Jeffers of Clark Fork; and five grandchildren.

Edith Dement Spokane

Visitation for Edith Lucille Dement, 87, will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday in the Sunset Mausoleum at Fairmount Memorial Park. Burial will follow.

Mrs. Dement, who was born in Walla Walla, died Saturday.

She was a 50-year Spokane resident.

Mrs. Dement worked as a meat packer for Armour Meats.

Her husband, Oscar, preceded her in death.

Survivors include three sons, Basil, William and Dell Dement, and a daughter, Clrisia Madison, all of Spokane; a stepson, Boyd Crookston of Idaho; a brother, Roy McDaniels of Athol, Idaho; and 19 grandchildren.

Ricky Reynaldo Figueroa Pinehurst, Idaho

Memorial service for Ricky Reynaldo Figueroa, 39, will be today at 11 a.m. at United Church of Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Figueroa, who was born in Wallace, died Thursday from natural causes.

He grew up in the Silver Valley and graduated from Kellogg High School in 1979.

He married Shanon McCorkle in 1982.

Mr. Figueroa had been working as an explosives technician for Northwest Energetic Service of Deer Park.

He was involved in bowling, hunting and youth basketball and was a Little League Baseball coach and a baseball umpire. He was also a member of the Kellogg Booster Club.

Survivors include his wife; and two children, Robbie and Jennifer Figueroa, at home; his father, Bill Galloway of Absarokee, Mont.; and six brothers and sisters, Vickie Findley of St. Maries, Danny Figueroa of Kingston, Idaho, Tom Figueroa of Las Vegas, Connie Keene and Terri Kenyon, both of Kellogg, and Kim Harrington of Coeur d’Alene.

Alvin Huntsman Hayden Lake, Idaho

Memorial gathering for Alvin F. Huntsman, 76, will be held at a later date. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Huntsman, who was born in Colton, Calif., died April 25 from cancer.

He served with the Army during World War II and later settled in Hayden Lake.

Mr. Huntsman had worked as an airplane inspector and then as a train engineer.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Huntsman and Dyann Huntsman; and a son, Robert Huntsman.

Edward Bachman Noxon, Mont.

Graveside service and interment for Edward Gustav “Ed” Bachman, 91, will be held at a later date at the Noxon Cemetery. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of local arrangements.

Mr. Bachman, who was born in Spokane, died April 26.

He grew up in Hillyard and then served with the Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II.

Mr. Bachman moved to Noxon, Mont., after the war and worked for the U.S. Forest Service and also operated a local repair business.

He attended the Noxon United Methodist Church and recently moved to the Idaho Veterans Home in Lewiston, Idaho.

Mr. Bachman was preceded in death by two wives, Audrey and Evelyn.

Survivors include two daughters, Dixie Holliday of Coeur d’Alene, and Joanne Everts of Spokane; a sister, Alma of Spokane; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
