Jack Johnson Cheney

Visitation for Jack D. Johnson, 58, will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Cheney Funeral Chapel. Service is planned for 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Born in Ogden, Utah, Mr. Johnson died Sept. 19.

He moved to Spokane in 1989 from Fairbanks, Alaska, and moved to Cheney in 1996.

Mr. Johnson worked in farming before working in commercial construction, and had worked on construction of the Shriners Hospital and Deaconess and Sacred Heart medical centers.

He also had worked as a truck driver for 43 years. He was currently working for Systems TWT Transportation.

Mr. Johnson was a member of the National Rifle Association, the North American Hunting Club and the Handy Mans Club.

Survivors include his wife of seven years, Cynthia; a son, Miles Amburgey of Vancouver, Wash.; two daughters, Cindi Boshee and Tia Hansen, both of Portland; his parents, Edgar Johnson of Washington and Evelyn Neal of Cortez, Colo.; two sisters, Edryn Kast of Cortez and Rochelle Wite of Woodland, Wash.; two brothers, Blaine Johnson of Hillsboro, Ore., and Bracey Neal of Carson City, Nev.; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Altha (Kuyhendahl) Jones Spokane

Service for Altha Mae (Kuyhendahl) Jones, 93, will be at 11 a.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Jones, who was born in Waco, Texas, died Saturday.

She married Frank Jones in 1921. They moved to Grand Coulee in 1936 and to Spokane in 1944.

Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she was also active in the Women’s Auxiliary.

Her husband died in 1963.

Survivors include two sons, Clarence Jones of Seattle and Carl Jones of Henderson, Nev.; a daughter, Lillian Anderson of Spokane; 16 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Opal Schaper Newport, Wash.

Service for Opal Alice Schaper, 74, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Deer Park Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow at the Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Schaper, who was born in Detroit, died Sunday.

She graduated from North Central High School in 1944, and in 1946 married Marvin Schaper. They lived in Spokane.

Mrs. Schaper worked as a color artist in the photography industry for Dorian, Christian and New Art Photography studios. She later became a homemaker when she and her husband moved to the Newport/ Elk area in 1975.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Donald Schaper of Spokane and Neil Schaper of Elk; two daughters, Diane Haines of Deer Park and Elaine Black of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren and four great-grandsons.

Ruth Crawford Spokane

Visitation for Ruth C. Crawford, 87, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Memorial service is planned for 11:30 a.m. Friday at Millwood Community Presbyterian Church. Private burial will be at the Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Crawford, who was born in Gibbs, Idaho, died Saturday.

Her family moved to Spokane when she was a child and she graduated from West Valley High School.

She worked for Armour Meat Packing during the 1930’s until she married George Crawford.

Mrs. Crawford was a homemaker and a member of Millwood Community Presbyterian Church and the Goodtime Travel Club.

Her husband died in 1991.

Survivors include a son, Norman Crawford of Spokane; two daughters, Joanne Hunton and Gayle Earling, both of Spokane; two sisters, Mabel Schreck of Spokane and Helen Busch of Pullman; a brother, Harry Olson of Spokane; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane, Millwood Community Presbyterian Church or the Hutton Settlement.

Shirley (Brookshire) Niland Spokane

Service for Shirley Rose (Brookshire) Niland, 60, will be at 1 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Post Falls.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Niland died Sunday.

She married Tom Niland in 1961 and was a homemaker. She also worked for St. Luke’s Hospital and in the security department at Lilac Lanes.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Daniel Niland of Seattle; a brother, Russell Brookshire of Seven Bays, Wash.; and a sister, Linda Brandley of Spokane.

Virginia Turner Post Falls

Service for Virginia L. Turner, 79, will be held today at 2 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls. Burial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls.

Mrs. Turner, who was born in Neodesha, Kan., died Sunday.

She lived in Post Falls for 45 years and was employed as a senior services social worker.

Mrs. Turner was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Bonner County Gleaners, and was active with various area volunteer organizations.

Her husband, Joe, died in 1972.

Survivors include a son, John Taylor of Post Falls; a stepson, Don Cooper of Greenacres; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bernadine (Hopfinger) Stalder Tonasket, Wash.

Memorial service for Bernadine (Hopfinger) Stalder, 58, will be at 11 a.m. today at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church in Tonasket. Bergh Funeral Service in Oroville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Stalder, who was born in Newport, Wash., died Saturday.

After graduating from Newport High School she moved to Spokane.

Mrs. Stalder worked as a teller in the banking industry in Spokane, Post Falls, Wenatchee and Tonasket.

She and her family later moved to Blanchard, Idaho, and then to Post Falls in 1972.

In 1980 Mrs. Stalder moved to Tonasket and to Wenatchee in 1989. She moved to Connell, Wash., in 1995, to Oldtown, Idaho, in 1998 and returned to Tonasket in 1999.

Survivors include two sons, Chris McGlothlan of Tonasket and Raymond McGlothlan of Wenatchee; a daughter, Denise Johnson of Tonasket; a brother, Edward Hopfinger Jr. of Blanchard; and seven grandchildren.

Clarke Schlimmer Odessa, Wash.

Memorial service for Clarke N. Schlimmer, 55, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Heritage Church in Odessa. Private inurnment will be held at a later date. Strate Funeral Home in Davenport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schlimmer, who was born in Odessa, died Friday.

He graduated from Marlin (Wash.) High School in 1963, and in 1968 married Barbara Gilbert.

Mr. Schlimmer worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad from 1968 to 1978 in Spokane and Bellingham.

He returned to Odessa in 1978 and worked in cattle ranching. He also had farmed for John Hardt for 22 years.

He was a member of the Marlin (Wash.) Gun Club and the Odessa Historical Society Survivors include his wife; his mother, Florence Schlimmer of Odessa; a brother, Rodney Schlimmer of McMinneville, Tenn.; and a sister, Laurel Iverson of Edmonds, Wash.

Preston Gensel Spokane

No service will be held for Preston Gensel, 94. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Colville, Wash., Mr. Gensel died July 31.

He was a 29-year Spokane resident.

Mr. Gensel worked in the grocery industry, and also owned and operated the Deer Park Cafe and Lounge for seven years. He managed the Veterans of Foreign Wars in the Spokane Valley.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Mable; three daughters, Arlene Pike of Spokane, Loren Gensel of Everett and Carol Hanson of Kansas City, Mo.; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Madeline Rouse Spokane

Private services were held for Madeline M. Rouse, 94. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North was in charge of arrangements.

A 68-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Rouse, died Friday. She was born in Martinburg, Iowa.

She was a homemaker and a member of Manito Presbyterian Church.

Her husband of 65 years, Homer, died in 1994.

Survivors include a son, Steve Rouse, and a daughter, Carol Atkins, both of Spokane; a sister, Fern Halloran of Danville, Calif.; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Ed Streeter Spokane

Memorial service for Ed Streeter, 53, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Streeter, who was born in Belle Fourche, S.D., died Saturday.

He graduated from mechanic school in Aberdeen, S.D.

Mr. Street and his wife, Mary, moved to Spokane in 1975.

He worked in the automobile and truck repair business, and owned and operated the Truck Shop.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Annette Haire of Spokane, Tammy Barker and Delores Kirsh, both of South Dakota, and Hope Street of New York; a son, Christopher Streeter of New York; a sister, Linda Hoff; three brothers, Lloyd Streeter of Washington, Dwayne Streeter of Oregon and Warren Streeter of South Dakota; and nine grandchildren.

Olive `Ole’ Rector Colbert

Service for Olive L. “Ole” Rector, 88, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

A longtime former Spokane resident, Mrs. Rector died Monday. She was born in Tulia, Texas.

She graduated from Creston (Wash.) High School in 1931.

Mrs. Rector was a homemaker.

She moved to Colbert eight years ago to live with her daughter.

Her husband, Everett, died in 1985.

Survivors include a daughter, Gail Quaid of Colbert; two stepsons, Ron and Jack Rector, both of Spokane; ten grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Agnes Hall Spokane

Funeral Mass for Agnes C. Hall, 92, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hall died Saturday.

She was a homemaker and a lifetime Spokane resident.

Her husband, Robert, died in 1986.

Survivors include four daughters, Joan Pribnow, Monica Brower and Roberta Boyd, all of Spokane, and Susan Boas of Bothell, Wash.; 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
