Mott’s goal powers Eagles past Aggies

Freshman Cyeeta Mott scored a goal in the 39th minute and goalkeeper Tiera Como made it stand up as the Eastern Washington Eagles defeated the Utah State Aggies 1-0 in a non-conference women’s soccer match on Sunday in Cheney.

Jennie Summers picked up an assist on Mott’s tally as Eastern evened its record at 2-2. Como finished with five saves.

•Ashley Pryor scored in the 42nd minute off a Christine Soma cross to spark the Gonzaga Bulldogs to a 2-1 home win over Boise State.

The Bulldogs’ first goal came in the 10th minute when midfielder Heather Horn’s pressure forced a Bronco defender into a clearing attempt that she put into her own net.

GU outshot the Broncos 17-8.

•Colorado College (1-3) scored four second-half goals to rally for a 4-2 non-conference victory over the Idaho Vandals (1-3) in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Idaho held a 2-0 lead at the half on goals by Ashley Cox and Alyson South, but the Tigers erupted for three goals in the first 16 minutes of the second half to pull out the victory. Ashley Hooverson had a hat trick for the Tigers.

•Five different players scored, four netting goals in the second half, as the Whitworth Pirates crushed visiting Rocky Mountain College 5-0 in non-conference play.

Mary Hultgrenn staked Whitworth to a 1-0 halftime lead with a goal at 8:40. The Pirates broke the game open in the final 45 minutes, getting scores from Rachel Leavitt, Jael Hagerott, Ashli Anderson and Kara Tisthammer.

•Cori Haw, Geanne Garcia and Kaycee Fontes all scored second-half goals to propel Fresno C.C. to a 3-0 win over the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch at the Sea Breeze Tournament in Oxnard, Calif.

Men’s soccer

Chris Smith found the net in the 71st minute to lift the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch to a 3-2 victory over Allan Hancock in the Allan Hancock Classic in Santa Maria, Calif.

Alex Megson and Nick Loyd staked the Sasquatch to a 2-0 lead with first-half goals.

Women’s golf

Washington State University’s Kim Welch finished in a tie for second place at the Notre Dame Invitational.

Welch, a two-time All-American, finished with a 5-over-par 221 and guided the Cougars to a second-place finish as a team. WSU finished five strokes behind Iowa State and seven strokes ahead of third-place Notre Dame.

The Cougars also had a sixth-place finish from Ana Kostina (226). Maria Kostina and Jay-Lee Longbottom tied for 12th at 230.

Notre Dame All-American Katie Brophy, a Gonzaga Prep grad, also tied for 12th.

Volleyball

The Eastern Washington Eagles fell just short of notching their first victory of the season, falling to the San Diego Toreros 26-30, 18-30, 30-28, 30-25, 12-15 at the Wahine Classic in Honolulu.

Keva Sonderen paced the Eagles (0-3) with 18 kills, while Christina Albers piled up 49 assists.
