Edmondson, Kallestad shine
Josh Edmondson and Jake Kallestad each went 3-0 on the day as North Idaho beat Western Wyoming, but fell to Northwest Wyoming and Iowa Central in a wrestling meet at Northwest Wyoming in Powell, Wyo.
Edmondson, from Medical Lake, won all three of his matches at 184 pounds. Kallestad was undefeated on the day at 285.
A trio of Cardinals also finished the day winning two of three matches: Jeff Hedges at 125 pounds, Tyson Hurst – a West Valley grad – at 157 pounds and Josh Erickson at 165 pounds all went 2-1.
As a team, the Cardinals knocked off Western Wyoming 27-15, but fell to Northwest Wyoming 19-17 and Iowa Central 25-9.
Track and field
Eleven women’s and four men’s records fell and two NCAA automatic qualifying marks and eight provisional marks were reached at the Cougar Indoor Track & Field Meet in Pullman.
Southern Cal’s Virginia Powell, a junior from Seattle’s Rainier Beach High School, ran an automatic qualifying and meet-record time of 8.06 seconds in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles. Powell, the 2005 USA Championships bronze-medal winner and 2005 Pac-10 and NCAA 100-meter hurdles champion, also reached a provisional qualifying time of 7.33 seconds in the prelims of the 60-meter dash.
Former Idaho Vandal Angela Whyte took third in the 60 meters (7.57) and second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.12).
Among the other top performers were Idaho’s Dee Olson – who set a meet record in the women’s mile, finishing at 4 minutes, 51.53 seconds – and Russ Winger, and Washington State’s Robin Mikesh, James McSwain and Justin Ireland.
Winger won the shot put title with a toss of 60 feet, 10 inches, a provisional qualifying mark.
Mikesh tied a meet record when she won the high jump at 5-8. McSwain set the 60-meter dash record with a provisional qualifying time of 6.69 seconds. Ireland also set a meet record when he won the mile in 4:15.79.
•Washington State All-American pole vaulter Tamara Diles reached a provisional qualifying mark at the National Pole Vault Summit at Reno, Nev., with a season-best vault of 13-3 1/2 .
Teammate and fellow All-American Tyson Byers felt a twinge in his hamstring on his second attempt and stopped, finishing the day with no height.
X Games
U.S. Olympic team member Nate Holland of Sandpoint edged Switzerland’s Marco Huser in the men’s snowboarder X to win his first gold in the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo.
