Poston helps Bonners wrap up IML title

Katie Poston was one of two Bonners Ferry girls finishing with a double-double as the Badgers secured the Intermountain League title with a 53-43 win Saturday at Priest River.

Poston ended the night with 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, and teammate Becky Lowther had 15 points, 10 rebounds and three assists for the Badgers (13-5, 7-0), who earned the IML’s 3A District I top seed.

Bonners, which has won six consecutive games and has yet to lose in 2006, jumped ahead early, grabbing a 14-2 lead after the first quarter and cruising from there.

Tabitha Clark led Priest River (10-9, 4-3) with nine points.

Katy Baker hit the game-tying shot late in the fourth quarter, then she hit the game-winning shot with 7 seconds left as Lake City pulled out a 48-46 Inland Empire League victory over Lakeland at Rathdrum. Baker finished with a game-high 16 points, while Riki Moreland added 12 for the Timberwolves (10-10, 7-5). Kayla Stiegemeier led Lakeland (13-7, 5-7) with 15 points and five steals. … Whitney Heleker had a game-high 13 points in her varsity debut as IEL champion Coeur d’Alene cruised past visiting Sandpoint 62-31. Kama Griffits added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Vikings (15-5, 10-2), and Deanna Dotts had 11 points. Kendal Burt led the Bulldogs (7-12, 3-8) with 13 points.

Cara Hayman finished with 18 points as Wallace (17-1, 8-0) won the North Star League title with a 50-44 win at Harrison over host Kootenai, the third time this season Wallace has beaten the Warriors. Krista Williams added 13 points for the Miners, who also earned the 1A District I top seed. Cassie Scheffelmaier had a game-high 19 points to lead Kootenai (14-5, 7-2). … Bailey Hewitt had a game-high 16 points as Clark Fork (6-11, 6-3) cruised past host Lakeside 47-19 at Plummer. Rayna Allen added 11 points for the Wampus Cats, while Wynonna Johnson had seven points to lead Lakeside (8-11, 3-6).

Boys

Richard Robinson had a pair of quick baskets in overtime and finished with a double-double, and Spenser Behrens led all scorers with 17 points as Bonners Ferry (10-5, 5-0) held off Priest River 57-45 in overtime in Intermountain League action at Priest River. Robinson finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Josh Hawks scored all five of his points from the free-throw line in overtime for the Badgers. Priest River (9-7, 2-3) was led by Micah Smith’s 11 points and 10 rebounds. Cody Smith added nine points for the Spartans. … Jeremiah Big Spring finished with a game-high 14 points as Kellogg (12-4, 5-1) held off host Timberlake 56-43 at Spirit Lake. Joey Sauer also had 14 points for the Wildcats. Levi Powers had a team-high 11 points for Timberlake (3-13, 1-4).

Nick Arthun led Wallace with 17 points as the Miners (6-10, 3-5) came back from a nine-point halftime deficit to beat host Kootenai 51-49 in North Star League action at Harrison. Jeff Ness missed a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left that could have tied the game for the Warriors (3-12, 1-6). Cody Cranford had a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Kootenai.

Washington girls

Kelsey Stillar finished with a game-high 24 points, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range, as host Lakeside cruised to a 57-31 win over Medical Lake (8-6, 2-5) in Great Northern League action at Nine Mile Falls. Kia Gibson had 11 points and Courtney Galvin eight points and six assists for the Eagles (11-4, 7-0). Richelle Daily had nine points and 14 rebounds to lead the Cardinals. … Krystal Smith finished with 13 points and nine rebounds as Pullman (11-4, 6-1) had six players with at least eight points en route to a 61-46 win over Chewelah at Pullman. Kelli Davis added 12 points for the Greyhounds, while Jochelle Schatz led all scorers with 23 points for Chewelah (10-5, 4-3).

Jenna Burbank had 12 points and 16 rebounds, and Sarah Knapton finished with 15 points as Republic held off Columbia 45-33 in Panorama League action at Republic. Karissa Lehn added 11 points for the Tigers (7-11, 4-8), while Lauri Erickson had a team-high 10 points for Columbia (3-14, 3-11). … Titi Ala did just about everything for St. George’s, finishing with 26 points, 14 rebounds, five steals and five assists as the Dragons (13-5, 9-3) used a 23-7 third quarter to break open a close game and beat Selkirk 57-36 at St. George’s. Jessee Rouse added 13 points for the Dragons, while Jessica Webb led the Rangers (6-12, 3-8) with 16 points. Maria Villegas also added 10 for Selkirk. … Amanda Smith had a game-high 22 points as Cusick (13-5, 9-3) stayed in a tie with St. George’s atop the Panorama’s South Division with a 68-43 win over host St. Michael’s. Misty Ostlie added 17 points for the Panthers, while Katie and Patty Urann led the Warriors (5-14, 1-11) with 12 points apiece.

Alyssa Koller finished with a double-double, racking up 12 points and 12 rebounds as LaCrosse-Washtucna (13-5, 8-2) survived 25 turnovers to beat Rosalia 48-37 in Whitman County League action at Rosalia. Karla Koller added nine points for the Tigercats, who were 14 of 26 from the free-throw line. Clarissa Harston had 11 points to lead Rosalia (4-13, 2-8), which was 4 of 11 from the foul line.

Hannah Winters had five points and 11 rebounds and went 3 of 4 from the free-throw line down the stretch as Northwest Christian (9-7, 8-6) held off visiting Valley Christian 45-40 in Bi-County League action. Kyla Schmidt led NWC with 15 points, while Kassey Miller had a game-high 16 points for the Panthers (1-15, 1-13). … Ann Marie Hunt had all eight of her points in the third quarter as Lind-Ritzville (6-10, 6-8) cruised past Odessa 50-30 at Odessa. Cassie Cole also had eight to lead the Broncos, while the Tigers (7-9, 5-9) were led by the 10 points of Andrea Kuch.

Washington boys

Kevin Broadnax was 6 of 11 from the field and finished with a game-high 19 points as Medical Lake (6-8, 3-4) fended off host Lakeside 49-41 in Great Northern League action at Nine Mile Falls. Andrew Richardson added 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting for the Cardinals. Joel Noland led Lakeside (8-7, 4-3) with 12 points. … Ben Hein had a game-high 12 points and added five rebounds as Pullman (13-1, 7-0) forced 26 turnovers in a 70-43 win over Chewelah at Pullman. Shad Strerath also added 12 points, and George Turner had 10 for the Greyhounds. Cameron Stroyan had 11 points to lead the Cougars (7-8, 5-2).

Derek Gianukakis had 29 points and 12 rebounds, and Zach Gianukakis had 13 points and 10 assists as Republic (15-2, 13-0 Panorama League) cruised past Columbia 75-46 at Republic. Todd Orestad added 15 points and Adam Hancock 13 for the Tigers. Tyrel Sampson led Columbia (1-15, 1-12) with 18 points. … Tyrone Novikoff had a game-high 26 points as five Cougars finished in double figures in Curlew’s 105-31 win at Northport (4-14, 2-11). Austin Mannick had 20 points, Cody Groth 18, Brandon Gregory 14 and Brice Zerck 11 for Curlew (14-3, 11-2). Luke LeCaire led Northport with eight points.
