Castellitto sets GU mark

Mark Castellitto hit a school-record three doubles Thursday as the Gonzaga University baseball team defeated Texas Arlington (3-6) 12-1 in the opening day of the Southwest Diamond Classic at Frisco, Texas.

Castellitto finished 4 for 5 for the Bulldogs (3-7) with four RBIs and two runs scored. CJ McClure pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn his first win of the season for Gonzaga.

Josh Monroe started the game, allowing one run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings. Gonzaga scored five runs in the top of the first inning.

“Whitworth earned its first victory of the year with a 10-1 win over Washington & Lee at the Desert Classic, held at various major league spring training sites in Arizona.

The Pirates (1-5) dropped their second game 9-5 to Trinity, which scored four runs in the ninth.

Football

The Idaho State Board of Education voted unanimously to approve a five-year contract for new University of Idaho coach Robb Akey, who will be paid at least $240,000 annually.

Board members said they liked the buyout provision: Akey would have to pay a $1 million termination fee if he leaves the school before Jan. 1, 2009.

“The Spokane Shock of arenafootball2 announced that offensive/defensive lineman Katon Bethay has been added to their 2007 roster.

Bethay is the fifth player from the 2006 ArenaCup Championship roster to re-sign with the Shock.
