Fresh Sheet: Some recipes for getting rich

Could puttering around the kitchen make you a millionaire? The only way to find out is to enter those creative inspirations into the 43rd Pillsbury Bake-Off Contest.

Now’s the time to get cooking – entries are due by midnight on April 22.

Enter your best original recipes in one of the following categories: Breakfast and Brunches, Entertaining Appetizers or Sweet Treats. There are two new recipe categories this year: Pizza Creations, which must use Pillsbury Refrigerated Pizza Crust in a pizza, calzone or panini recipe; and Old El Paso Mexican Favorites, for recipes made with Old El Paso participating products.

Each recipe must use two or more eligible products from a list of products from contest sponsors. New ingredients include Land O Lakes stick butter; Jif peanut butter; Smucker’s jams, jellies, preserves, fruit spreads and ice cream toppings; Crisco cooking oil; Eggland’s Best eggs; C&W or Domino sugar; and Fisher nuts.

The contest finals will be held April 13 through 15, 2008, in Dallas. The 100 contest finalists will each receive a GE microwave and an all-expenses trip to the contest in Dallas, among other prizes. In addition to the $1 million grand prize, awards include: $5,000 prizes for recipe category winners; a $5,000 award for America’s Favorite Recipe awarded by those who vote online for their favorite among the 100 final recipes; a GE Profile double-oven freestanding range, plus $3,000 in other kitchen appliances for the most innovative recipe and a $5,000 award for the best recipe using at least a 1/4 cup of Jif peanut butter.

Yahoo! Food will host the official contest Web site at bakeoff.yahoo.com. On that Web site, cooks will find the list of eligible products and the amount of each that must be used in recipes, official contest rules and entry forms. Only entries submitted through the Web site’s electronic form will be accepted.

The contest is open to amateur cooks who are 18 and older.

Beef Cook-Off deadline approaching

Cooks can also enter their favorite beef recipes in this year’s National Beef Cook-Off for a chance to win $50,000.

This year’s contest encourages families to work together on an entry. The 25 finalists will include five parent/child teams from the Kids in the Kitchen category.

Entries are due by March 31 and entries should be in one of four categories: New Dynamic Beef Dishes, with no more than 10 ingredients and which can be prepared in 60 minutes or less; Nuevo Latino Beef Recipes, incorporating cooking techniques of Mexico, Central America, the Carribean or South America or a fusion of Latino and American flavors; Kids in the Kitchen, for a child between the ages of 8 and 12 and their parent or legal guardian; or “Small Plates, Big Taste” Grilled for Everyday Entertaining.

Official cook-off rules and entry forms are available online at www.beefcookoff.org. Or entries can be sent via mail to: National Beef Cook-Off Entries, ANCW, P.O. Box 3881, Englewood, CO 80155.

Finalists will compete in the 2007 cook-off Sept. 11 through 13 in Chicago.
