In brief: Packers CEO remains as successor takes leave

Bob Harlan will delay his retirement as the Green Bay Packers’ chief executive officer because hand-picked successor John Jones is taking a leave for personal reasons.

The Packers announced Saturday that Jones is taking an indefinite leave of absence from the team because of “management concerns.”

In a hastily arranged news conference, Packers executive committee member Peter Platten said he could not provide specifics.

“But I will tell you that they did not involve personal conduct or ethical violations,” Platten said.

Mauresmo upset

Top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo was upset by sixth-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the final of the Strasbourg International at Strasbourg, France.

“Juan Monaco beat Gael Monfils of France 7-6 (3), 6-0 to win his second career title at the Hypo Group International in Poertschach, Austria.

“Elena Dementieva won the Istanbul Cup at Istanbul, Turkey, when Aravane Rezai withdrew from the final because of a knee injury.

Dementieva led 7-6 (5), 3-0 when Rezai retired.

Doping admitted

The doping scandal in German cycling spread to the amateur ranks when an Olympic team doctor admitted providing performance-enhancing testosterone to riders in the 1980s.

Georg Huber, who worked on six Olympic teams, acknowledged he gave cyclists testosterone between 1980 and 1990.

“Stefano Garzelli beat Gilberto Simoni in a sprint to win the 14th stage of the Giro d’Italia in Bergamo, Italy, and Danilo Di Luca retained the overall lead.

Duke lacrosse wins

The Duke Blue Devils lacrosse team blew a seven-goal lead, then got the game-winner from Zack Greer with 3 seconds left to beat Cornell 12-11 in Baltimore and advance to the NCAA Division I championship game. Duke will face Johns Hopkins, which defeated Delaware 8-3.

“Marta Fernandez and Mwadi Mabika each scored 19 points and the Los Angeles Sparks routed host Connecticut 88-68 in WNBA play.

“Jockey Andrew Lakeman remained in critical condition in a New York hospital with spinal injuries after a spill at Belmont Park a day earlier.

“In IBF title fights, American Steve Cunningham won the cruiserweight belt, outpointing Poland’s Krzysztof Wlodarczyk in Katowice, Poland, and Germany’s Arthur Abraham stopped Canada’s Sebastien Demers in the third round at Bamberg, Germany, to defend his middleweight crown.
