Plenty on menu this week (events)

Looking for some fun for your taste buds in the next week or so? You’re in luck. Choose from this list of pleasures for the palate:

Try bulgogi, saengsun-tuigim and ojinguh-bokum during a dinner Saturday to celebrate Spokane’s sister city Jecheon, Korea.

A traditional Korean dinner will be served from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kaylon Garden, 2819 N. Division St. The menu includes: bulgogi, beef strips marinated in a sauce of ginger, garlic, green onions, soy sauce and wine; saengsun-tuigim, fried fish pieces with a sweet sauce; ojinguh-bokum, sautéed cuttlefish strips with vegetables in a spicy sauce; japchae, rice noodles prepared with beef and vegetables; kongnamul, steamed soybean sprouts in soy sauce, garlic, green onions and sesame oil; sigumchee-muchim, tangy cooked spinach salad mixed with sesame oil, garlic and soy sauce; and kimchee, spicy Chinese cabbage pickled with ginger, garlic, green onions, red pepper and other ingredients.

Whitestone Winery, in the renovated gas station in downtown Wilbur, Wash., will open for a barrel tasting Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Winemaker Michael Haig will guide tasters through several barrel samples while talking about how decisions on yeast, barrels and time can create different flavors.

The winery will also release its next Pieces of Red, version 3.04. Previous releases of this wine have won nods from Wine Press Northwest and Novus Vinum of Gayot.com.

There will be Egger’s sausage and sirloin burgers on the grill. Tickets are $5 in advance or $7.50 at the winery. Call (509) 647-5325 for tickets or more details.

If hitting the Spokane Women’s Show is part of your Saturday agenda, don’t miss the Battle of the Chefs cook-off.

Local chefs will show off their skills during the competition. The first round of the “Iron Chef”-style competition hits the stage at 12:15 p.m. There is another round of eliminations at 1:45, with the semifinals at 4 and finals at 6.

The show is sponsored by Sacred Heart Medical Center and Children’s Hospital, KREM-2 TV and Safeway. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased through ticketswest.com. Children ages 5 and younger are admitted free.

Save room for an Earth Dinner with Wild Sage on Tuesday. Celebrate Earth Day with a five-course dinner of local foods paired with local wines. Chefs Alexa Wilson and Gare Trager will talk about the importance of local foods.

The dinner will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Grand Ronde Cellars tasting room, 906 W. Second Ave. It is a fundraiser for Slow Food Spokane.
