Mom, infant escape during carjacking at brewery

A man was arrested Friday after a woman had to beg a carjacker to let her retrieve her 10-day-old infant from the car before he took the sedan.

Police say Dustin M. Lange, 18, brandished a pistol-grip shotgun while stealing the car outside Northern Lights Brewery, 1003 East Trent Ave. Several officers saw the stolen 1998 Ford Escort being driven near the scene of the crime before Lange allegedly ditched the car in the parking lot of a FedEx warehouse on East Broadway Avenue, ran through the building still staffed by employees and hid in a trailer at a loading dock.

A police dog led authorities to Lange, and then traced his scent to the stolen car and shotgun. The shotgun, police said, had been reported stolen earlier on Friday. Police said a large amount of marijuana was also found, though it was not clear where the drugs were found.

Lange was charged with first-degree assault, first-degree robbery, second-degree burglary and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.
