Ankle injury might sideline Seahawks’ QB Tarvaris Jackson for only two weeks

Bob Condotta Seattle Times

RENTON, Wash. – Seahawks backup quarterback Tarvaris Jackson suffered a high-ankle sprain during Friday’s 22-20 presason loss to the Denver Broncos, coach Pete Carroll confirmed Monday.

Whether that has the team on high alert in terms of its backup-quarterback situation, though, is to be determined

Carroll said Jackson thinks he will be out only a couple weeks.

“He feels pretty good about it,” Carroll said.

If so, that means the team doesn’t necessarily have to worry about making a move to acquire a backup quarterback.

Still, the Seahawks might consider acquiring another quarterback to get through training camp. Seattle had only two quarterbacks Monday – starter Russell Wilson and R.J. Archer.

B.J. Daniels, the third-team quarterback at the end of last season, has been moved to receiver and returner and appears to have a legitimate shot to make the team in that role. He took a couple of snaps at quarterback Monday, and Carroll said he could be a third quarterback if needed.

But Carroll said the team does not want to affect Daniels chance to make the team as a receiver/returner by having him fill in at quarterback.

“We’re going to try and not let it become a distraction for him,” Carroll said. “It’s kind of a back-burner thought, but he’ll get some reps every day. We’re going to kind of bank on what’s happened in the past ‘cause we want to give him the competitive shot at the receiver spot.”

Daniels said he is open to whatever the team asks.

“Yeah, if they tell me tomorrow to be a kicker, then I’ll do that,” he said.

As for adding another quarterback, Carroll said the team is “looking at it. We looked at a guy today, and we’ll just keep looking at it.”

Jackson, the backup the past two seasons, was re-signed to a one-year deal in June guaranteeing him $1.5 million this season.
