Your weekly roundup

Some odds and ends from the past week in local craft beer:

– This year’s Inland Northwest Ale Trail maps have started making their way to area breweries. The number of stops on the trail has increased by half – from 27 to 41, stretching from Ellensburg and Yakima to the west, to Wallace to the east – but it still takes 12 visits (and map stamps) to earn a souvenir 32-ounce grunt. An accompanying smartphone app is on the way.

– WestCoast Entertainment’s “Brews & Broadway” pairs local craft beer with three upcoming performances in its Best of Broadway series: “The Illusionists: Live From Broadway,” Feb. 13 with River City, and “42nd Street” on March 26 and “Disney’s Newsies” on May 7, both with 238 and English Setter. Packages are $125 and include two orchestra-level seats, a private party with the brewers and four drink tickets.

– Wallace Brewing, which just expanded distribution into southern Idaho, has launched a 6:60 India pale lager (6 percent alcohol by volume, 60 International Bitterness Units) brewed with pilsner malt, orange peel and a “secret” New Zealand hop for a semi-sweet, citrusy character.

– Pullman’s Paradise Creek releases its seasonal, traditional English-style Invective Stout (6.2, 56) on Sunday.

Moxee-Moron Imperial Session IPA (7.5, 70) from a team led by Yakima’s Bale Breaker – hopped with Simcoe, Mosaic, Citra and an experimental variety – will be one of six collaboration beers featured in this year’s Beer Camp Across America variety pack from Sierra Nevada, scheduled for a May release. Joining Bale Breaker (an Ale Trail newcomer) in the Pacific Northwest/Rockies group were fellow hopheads Barley Brown’s (Oregon), Black Raven (Western Washington), Melvin (Wyoming) and Odell (Colorado).

– Speaking of the Yakima Valley, Cascade (4,935 acres harvested), Centennial (3,770), Zeus (2,989), Simcoe (2,916) and Citra (2,335) were the most popular hops grown in Washington last year, according to the just-released year-end report from the Hop Growers of America. Trendy Citra is the newcomer to the top five, replacing Summit from 2014. Acres harvested totaled 32,158, up 11 percent; the biggest percentage increases belonged to El Dorado (196 percent), Mosaic (128) and Azacca (122).

– The Steam Plant’s annual February “For the Love of Beer” features $5 growler fills ($6 for specialties) during daily happy hours from 3 to 6 and 9 to 10 p.m.

Mad Bomber has introduced a monthly series of Mad Bomber Action Comics art prints styled after classic comic book covers. Fifty numbered prints will be sold each month, with a portion of proceeds donated to charity; all of the No. 1s will be auctioned as a collection at a future event.
