Sen. Robert Kennedy, D-New York, stands with Everest climber Jim Whittaker, left, of Seattle after they and other members of a National Geographic Society mountain climbing party returned from a base camp at Mt. Kennedy, 150 miles west of Whitehorse,Yukon Territory in 1965. Fifty years later, the men’s sons climbed the peak as well. A documentary about that effort, “Return to Mt. In 1965, Jim Whittaker, the first American to summit Mount Everest and former REI CEO, and Sen. Robert Kennedy made the first ascent of Mount Kennedy, named for Kennedy’s late brother, President John F. Kennedy.

Fifty years later, Whittaker’s sons Bob and Leif and Kennedy’s son Christopher made the climb themselves to celebrate the bond that connected their fathers, and themselves.

The aptly named documentary “Return to Mount Kennedy,” directed by Eric Becker, will be screened at the Bing Crosby Theater on Feb. 16.

The film features music by Eddie Vedder, Mudhoney, REM, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Lord Huron, as well as never before seen footage and photos of Robert Kennedy.

Bob Whittaker and Becker will be joined by special guest Krist Novoselic (Nirvana, Giants in the Trees) at the Bing Crosby Theater for a post-screening chat. The film includes Nirvana footage.

Tickets for the screening are $11 and are available through www.bingcrosbytheater.com.
