Front Porch: Gather ye Chuck E. Cheese tokens while ye may

With four sons, I’ve lost count of the number of Chuck E. Cheese, Wonderland, Laser Quest and bowling birthday parties we’ve hosted. For years I insisted on home birthday bashes, which involved traditional games like pin the tail on the donkey and musical chairs. Those were the kind of birthday parties I attended as a kid. However, hot potato cannot compete with the electric mayhem of video games and fire trucks with lights and sirens.

Spokane teenagers make history in national music competition

Janet Phang, 14, and duet partner Justin Cai, 15, won first place in senior duet category of the Music Teacher’s National Associations annual competition. Phang also won third place in the solo category. A performer has never placed in both the duet and solo categories in the history of the competition.

Sprague revitalization efforts get boost with taxing district

The effort to lift Sprague up moved forward last month when the Spokane City Council approved a request by a majority of East Sprague business and property owners to create a business improvement district, a self-taxing zone that raises money to fund projects within the area. For East Sprague, that means more help to keep the streets clean and remove graffiti, more security and a drive to promote the area as a place to eat, shop and live.

Gardening: Prevention best plan of attack for weeds

Our spring is at least three to four weeks early at the moment. I have peonies and iris ready to open that don’t usually pop until the first week of June. The lilacs are done and we are still two weeks out from the Lilac Festival. I couldn’t spray my cherry tree for fruit worms because the apples were blooming right on top of it and I didn’t want to harm the bees.

Valley Council seat vacancies open for applications

Applications are being accepted for two seats on the Spokane Valley City Council, left vacant by the recent resignations of Dean Grafos and Chuck Hafner. Applicants must be United States citizens, 18 years or older, registered voters and have lived in Spokane Valley for at least a year prior to applying.
