A week of bitterly cold temperatures should improve Thursday as a fresh layer of snow falls across the Inland Northwest.

Punxsutawney Phil’s prognosticated “six more weeks of winter” on Groundhog Day appears to be coming to a head, at least in Spokane.

Nearly 60 vehicle crashes accompanied the first major winter storm of the year, according to the Spokane Police Department.

After a lackluster snow performance in January, a winter blast to the tune of 3 to 5 inches of snow was expected Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, making for a “challenging” morning commute in the Spokane-Coeur d’Alene metro area, according to the National Weather Service Spokane.

The second of three atmospheric rivers is battering the West, bringing prolific mountain snows and soaking rains in the lower elevations and driving the risk of flooding and avalanches. Yet another in the recent series of storms will approach Northern California late in the week.

After a stretch of sunny, cold weather, clouds and snow are making their way back to the Inland Northwest.

Spokane-area mountains will block some of the arctic blast that is pushing frigid temperatures south over much of the country this weekend, but the colder temperatures likely will remain here for the duration of winter, according to the long-term forecast.

More than 550 flights departing or heading for DFW International Airport and Dallas Love Field have been canceled as of 9:20 a.m. Friday, according to FlightAware. An additional 100+ are delayed.
