Key matchup: Junior guard Kjay Bradley Jr. has been bright spot for Toreros

The Toreros have only one player in double figures, Kjay Bradley Jr., and two more that are close. GU has four averaging in double digits and two more knocking on the door. Bradley, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound junior averaging 15.4 points, obviously has been USD’s main scoring threat and Gonzaga’s primary concern defensively.

Gonzaga moved up in the latest AP college basketball poll, ending five straight weeks of slipping in the rankings. The Zags (12-4) climbed one spot to No. 18 after opening West Coast Conference play with wins over Pepperdine (89-82), Portland (81-50) and Loyola Marymount (96-68).

LOS ANGELES – Khalif Battle’s footwear selection initially caught the attention of assistant Brian Michaelson in a hallway near the visitor’s locker room after Gonzaga’s 96-68 victory at Loyola Marymount Saturday night. Two inquisitive reporters followed up to gather more information on the guard’s fashion choice during postgame interviews at Gersten Pavilion.

Gonzaga’s Michael Ajayi provides spark off the bench for second straight game

Gonzaga forward Michael Ajayi caught up his former coach at Pepperdine, Lorenzo Romar, earlier Saturday. On Friday night, Ajayi and former Waves teammate Jevon Porter chatted on the phone. And roughly a half hour after Ajayi turned in one of his better performances of the season in Gonzaga’s 96-68 rout Saturday over Loyola Marymount, Ajayi and Porter visited again leaving the Gersten Pavilion court.

Senior forward Ben Gregg makes most of return to Gonzaga’s starting lineup

Ben Gregg has been here before as a starter and on the other side as a key reserve. He’s experienced it a couple times this season as well as last year. On Thursday, the fifth-year senior forward’s name boomed over the Spokane Arena’s public address system with Gonzaga’s starting five again prior to tip-off against Portland.

Gonzaga opens up big lead, keeps pedal down in 81-50 blowout over Portland

By the end of the first half filled with missed shots, Portland scoring first was just a vague memory. That’s because the Pilots’ second basket came more than 7 minutes and 30 seconds later. Their next points came on two free throws after 4 minutes and 20 seconds. Gonzaga wasn’t exactly lighting it up at 34.3% from the field in the opening half, but it hardly mattered because of Portland’s penchant for dry spells and turnovers.

Gonzaga resumes busy stretch of games, faces Portland at the Spokane Arena

It’s a new calendar year as college basketball nears the midpoint of the season, but Gonzaga wouldn’t mind turning back the clock. Not way back, but perhaps to how the Zags burst out of the starting gate in November winning their first five and rising to No. 3 in the AP poll. Or even late November when Gonzaga was 7-1 and perhaps a possession from being unbeaten.
