Greenacres Middle School to host lake cruise fundraiser

Greenacres Middle School has planned a one-hour dinner cruise on Lake Coeur d’Alene on Oct. 2 to raise funds for new technology. The cruise begins at 6 p.m. Those who can’t make the cruise are welcome for dessert in the Coeur d’Alene Resort Bay rooms at 7 p.m. There will be a silent auction that includes a basketball signed by this season’s Gonzaga University men’s basketball team, a Spokane Shock football signed by last season’s team, four Disneyland Park Hopper passes, and a year of dance classes from Donna’s School of Dance.

Eastern Washington students make National Merit Scholar semifinals

Several students from across Eastern Washington were recently named semifinalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students will continue to compete for 7,400 scholarships worth more than $32 million. The semifinalists are: Shogo Starr (Cheney High School), Andrew Hoover (Mt. Spokane High School), Jeremy Ryan (Medical Lake High School), Juyun Phang (Gonzaga Preparatory School), Brendon Davis and Kyle Thiessen (both of Lewis and Clark High School), Jacob Ross and Maggie Young (both of Central Valley High School) and Gaelyn Prior (East Valley High School),

Elks donate supplies to Trent, Rogers

The Elks Lodge recently purchased more than $800 worth of school supplies and presented those supplies to Trent Elementary School and Rogers High School. The lodge donated glue sticks, pencils and colored pencils, folders, and spiral and composition notebooks to Trent, and they donated spiral notebooks, pencils and 16 GB flash drives to the high school. The Elks Lodge has bought supplies for local schools for the past three years with the help of a Gratitude Grant from the Elks National Foundation and plans to donate school supplies again next fall.

Area schools start to open this week and next

Several area school districts begin the 2015-16 school year this week. Students in the Liberty School District return to school today. Students in grades 1-12 in the Spokane Public Schools District will begin class Monday. Kindergarten students begin Sept. 3.

Woodridge students earn $1,100 by recycling

Woodridge Elementary School students have earned $1,100 for the school by collecting more than 10,000 drink pouches. The school competed in TerraCycle and Capri Sun’s Drink Pouch Brigade contest. The program rewards people who collect and send their waste to TerraCycle to be recycled or upcycled.

STEM camp for girls

This week, Eastern Washington University is hosting 50 students for an American Association of University Women Tech Trek STEM camp. The girls are being introduced to science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields including robotics, environmental science and mobile app development, which teaches young girls how to code and apply those skills to future careers in video games, fashion design and animation.

Education Notebook: Many attend Chicago leadership event

Students from several area high schools recently competed in the Future Business Leaders of America national conference, which was June 27-July 3 in Chicago. Central Valley High School was represented by Ryan Baker, who placed second in computer problem solving; Kyle Wang, who placed third in securities and investments; and Coleman Entringer, Kieran Natarajan and Henry Jiao, who all earned top 14 honors as finalists in global business.

Lakeside grad wins Gates Scholar full-ride to Whitworth

Haley Abrahamson-Fernandez, a recent graduate of Lakeside High School in Nine Mile Falls, has received a full-ride scholarship to Whitworth University through the Gates Millennium Scholar program. The program was established in 1999 and is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This year, the program awarded 1,000 scholarships.

Education notebook: Brennan is new principal at Salnave

Cheney Public Schools has hired Celina Brennan as the principal of Salnave Elementary School. Brennan previously taught at Salnave for nine years. Brennan graduated from Eastern Washington University in 2002 with a degree in education. In 2010, she received her master’s degree at Whitworth University. She recently completed EWU’s principal certification program.

Northwest Christian to hold 13th benefit golf tournament

Northwest Christian Schools will host its 13th annual golf tournament on Friday. The 2015 Touchdown & Tees Golf Benefit begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at Deer Park Golf Club, 1201 N. Country Club Drive, Deer Park. In this scramble-format tournament, every player will have a minimum of two drives and two other shots used in the 18-hole course. Mulligans are available for purchase online in advance of or on the day of the tournament.

Education notebook: Shadle students shine in finance challenge

Seven Shadle Park High School students were recently announced as having placed in the top 10 percent of the Washington Finance Challenge. Ben Davis, Steven Schleigh, Jed Canfield, Taylor McCormick, Justin Goin, Spencer Kerr and Anthony Grier, all students of Erin Ruehl, completed the online evaluation of their financial knowledge in January.

Education Notes: Northwest Christian offers sports camp

Northwest Christian Schools is offering a Crusader Summer Sports Camp for students entering first through eighth grades. The camp, which runs Monday through Wednesday, will introduce students to various sports and improve upon their existing skills. Crusader Camp is run by the high school coaching staff, assistant coaches and high school athletes. Athletes do not have to attend Northwest Christian to attend the camp.

It’s never too late for this Liberty graduate

Though senior year of high school is often a year of lasts – last time memorizing a new locker combination, last time getting dressed up for homecoming, last time asking friends to sign yearbooks – it was a year of firsts for Liberty High School senior Trishia McTaggart. Wanting to get the most out of her final year after a slow start to high school, McTaggart spent the year trying new activities. She cheered on the basketball and football teams as a first-time cheerleader and jumped head first into Future Business Leaders of America, placing eighth in marketing with her teammate, all while pitching and playing shortstop in softball, which she’s played since sixth grade.

Education Notes: University High hosts Hooper Bowl

University Elementary School is hosting Hooper Bowl, a teachers versus teachers basketball game, on Friday. The event will include a silent auction to raise money to send fifth-graders to Gonzaga University for a day. The auction begins at 5:30 p.m. and closes at halftime. The game begins at 6:15 p.m. at Bowdish Middle School, 2109 S. Skipworth Road, Spokane Valley.

Education Notebook: St. George’s teams earn state academic honor

St. George’s School’s varsity baseball team’s and varsity boys tennis team’s grade-point averages of 3.499 and 3.656, respectively, have earned them the WIAA Academic State Championship for highest grade-point average among 2B-size schools. The baseball team players are Chris Caporicci, Charlie Darnall, Hunter Hyde, Matthew Lazarus, Hunter Nolte, Blaise Osborne, Cody Peplinksi, Zach Steele, Katie Thew, Michael Thew, Felix Tsai, Alex Watkins, Isaac Werkman and Xander Werkman.

Education notebook: Ferris theater students take on bullying

To take a stand against bullying, Ferris High School theater students will premiere a three-part production on the subject tonight. Ferris students identified bullying as an issue in the community and wrote three performances – “Bystander Blues”; “I Don’t Want to Talk About It”; and “Selfie” – that explore the topic.

University High School’s production of “Mary Poppins” opens tonight. The musical stars Caitlyn Duffey as Mary Poppins,  Evan Figuracion as Bert,  Jeremy Pope as George Banks,  Nic Harris as Winifred Banks,  Jasmine Storey as Mrs. Brill, Caitlyn Horton as Bird Woman, Brady MacGruder as Robertson Ay and Rylee Harlen as Miss Andrew.
