Everyone understands how to influence the future. Catch ’em while they’re young and malleable. It’s why Sparky the Fire Dog visits elementary schools during Fire Prevention Week to teach the importance of a home fire escape plan and working smoke detectors. It’s why Joe Camel was killed off by the Federal Trade Commission in 1997 as a shady character enticing young people into a lifetime smoking habit – preferably Camel brand cigarettes. It’s why passions run high over sex and sexuality curriculum.

I don’t remember a time in my life without salmon. My family’s life revolved around the Klamath River salmon runs as they moved through the Yurok Reservation in Northern California. Every generation of my family since time immemorial fished at the same spots on the river — the salmon was in our DNA. 

The excitement of University of Washington and Gonzaga University students learning together in Spokane’s newest hub for medical and health education is something to be celebrated, not just by our two universities, but by patients, providers, and community members throughout eastern Washington.

Like a lot of parents right now, I’m rolling my cart down the aisle of my local stores, shopping for the best deals on school supplies. With five children, I have a long list that includes notebooks, binders, colored pencils, tissues, hand sanitizer, and more.

There are currently only six publicly owned access roads leading to Lake Pend Oreille between Sandpoint’s Long Bridge and Farragut State Park on the west side. This is 47 miles of shoreline. Most people access this side of the lake because they’re coming from Spokane, Coeur d’Alene or Sandpoint. The east side of the lake is remote and has very limited road access due to steep slopes.

U.S. President Joe Biden gave a prime-time speech last week ostensibly to battle for the soul of the nation. There is a real threat from those who are willing to practice violence in the name of politics, but the nature of the threat was obscured by a thinly veiled partisan appeal to his base to Vote! Vote! Vote!
