Nick Gibson joined The Spokesman-Review in January 2024 as the County Reporter covering surrounding counties including the city of Spokane Valley. Nick previously was a college summer intern reporter in May, 2022 prior to graduation from Washington State University where he was the editor of the arts section at the Daily Evergreen during the 2021-22 school year.

Riverfront Park’s red wagon closed for repairs

Spokane’s iconic 26-ton red wagon will be closed for three weeks starting Tuesday while it gets some much-needed TLC. Contractors for Spokane Parks and Recreation will give the wagon a fresh coat of red paint, in addition to making some small metal repairs, the city park department said in a news release.

Doomsday the Cat mural graces Bloomsday route

Participants in the 46th running of Bloomsday likely saw two critters as they made their way up the notorious Doomsday Hill: one feathered and one fur-covered. There was the familiar sight of The Vulture, a staple of the race since 1987, and then there was Doomsday, a 14-by-70-foot orange tabby cat.
