Fewer inmates will fight fires

Legislative budget cuts mean the Department of Natural Resources will have fewer inmate work crews trained to fight forest fires this year. Operations were closed and crews cut from two prisons in Snohomish and Kitsap counties, as well as from other facilities, officials said. In the past, in partnership with the state Department of Corrections, the DNR maintained 48 10-person inmate firefighting crews stationed at various correction facilities throughout the state. About 16 crews were cut total.

More than 100 people gathered in front of Spokane City Hall on Thursday evening to rally for police accountability and changes to an oversight process they see as flawed. Carrying signs that read “Stop police abuse” and “End police brutality,” the group circled the Post Street entrance to City Hall chanting, “Josh Levy, Otto Zehm, Shonto Pete, not again!”

Driver sued over deadly wreck

A Mead man left paraplegic and widowed by a motorcycle accident June 2 is suing the Spokane stockbroker allegedly responsible for the crash. Gary G. Keller is seeking damages for personal injuries inflicted by 42-year-old Jon A. Strine, according to documents filed in Spokane County Superior Court on Monday. Strine’s wife, Anja B. Krammer, is also listed as a defendant.

Hot summer job

CHEWELAH, Wash. – Kelsey Larsen had barely shed her cap and gown after graduating from Colville High School two weeks ago before exchanging them for green Nomex pants, a yellow fireproof shirt, and a hard hat. Larsen, 18, will get used to her new garb over the next three months as a wildland firefighter. She is one of 50 new firefighters hired by state and federal agencies to battle blazes in forests and public lands this summer in Washington. She and the other rookies spent this week training at the Chewelah Peak Learning Center in the Colville National Forest.

Reward offered for tips on finding 10 fugitives

Crime Stoppers of the Inland Northwest is offering cash rewards for information that leads to the arrest of any of nearly a dozen fugitives wanted on suspicion of various crimes in the Spokane area. •Theodore S. Williams, 58, is wanted by authorities on a charge of felony riot. Williams is a 6-foot black man and 150 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. His last known address was 508 E. Providence Ave.

Teenager seriously hurt in collision on Lake CdA

Kootenai County sheriff’s deputies investigated two collisions Friday involving personal watercraft on North Idaho waterways, one in which a 14-year-old girl was sent to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The first occurred about 11:40 a.m. on the Spokane River near the Mill River Condominiums. Scott D. Williams, 53, and Jason R. Owens, 25, both of Coeur d’Alene, were riding on Sea-Doo watercraft when Williams made an aggressive turn with a large amount of spray, police said. Owens drove through the spray and struck Williams’ watercraft, ejecting Williams. Neither man was injured. The watercraft were towed to shore.

Visiting helpers carried H1N1

At least five members of a San Diego church group who spent more than a week volunteering in North Idaho have tested positive for the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu. More than 100 members of the religious group arrived in Bonners Ferry by chartered bus sometime last week. The group hosted various events in the community, including barbecues for law enforcement, and completed volunteer projects, including ramp-building for people with disabilities, Panhandle Health District officials said.

Friends gather to mark Spokane grandmother’s loss

The stainless steel cross bearing a photo of 29-year-old Robb Long, placed where Sprague Avenue crosses under Interstate 90, no longer stands. In its place the state Department of Transportation erected a “Don’t Drink and Drive” sign in memory of Long, the Costco pharmacy technician killed by a drunken driver while driving home from work on his moped in 2006.

Kevin M. Harding, 33, is wanted for first-degree theft. He has a 19-year criminal history, including a previous conviction for theft.

A man charged with killing a Mead woman and possibly leaving her husband paralyzed Tuesday night was allegedly drinking at two bars before the accident, according to court records. Jon A. Strine, 42, made his first appearance in Spokane County Superior Court on Wednesday on charges of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.

In the aftermath of a weekend water-rescue on the Spokane River at the Barker Road Bridge, fire crews spent Monday using the dangerous spot as training ground. “It’s like a big spaghetti strainer down there,” full of logs and other debris, said Spokane Fire Department Battalion Chief Craig Cornelius. “We’re just very, very lucky that nobody has died in that part of the river yet.”

Warm weather has pushed the fire danger in several Eastern Washington counties from low to moderate, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources announced Friday. Areas affected include Lincoln, Spokane and Okanogan counties, and fire districts 1 and 2 in Stevens County, the DNR said.
