Eye on Boise: Lawmakers ante up for arts, after first killing budget

BOISE – After the Idaho House earlier had earlier rejected the budget for the Idaho Commission on the Arts in an unrelated dispute, it voted 51-17 on Thursday in favor of a new version with just one difference: There’s an extra $200 in the budget for private donations for arts education projects. Rep. Wendy Horman, R-Idaho Falls, in an unusual move, announced to the House, “I’m taking up a collection.” She brandished a stack of cash. “Members of JFAC have already been very generous, as well as many members around me,” she told the House.

Front Porch: Surgery an eye-opening experience

My husband now has the best eyesight of anyone in our family. He used to have the worst. Bruce has worn glasses since he was a very young boy. The big E at the top of the eye chart was not only fuzzy to him, he couldn’t even see the chart because the entire wall was a blur. We don’t actually know what his vision measured out to be. His optometrist explained that they pretty much stop counting at 20/400, so Bruce’s vision was considered 20/400-plus.

Huckleberries: Former CdA parks boss creative, but not doggedly so

In his 30 some years as the Coeur d’Alene parks director, Doug Eastwood used his creative genius to help plan the North Idaho Centennial Trail and expand the city’s park system, despite limited funds. However, Doug’s creativity was limited when it came to naming dogs. One after another of his yellow dogs with Labrador blood shared the same name: Smokey. Or, if it was a female, Smokie.
