Spokane County commissioners make way for developments near Whitworth University

Spokane County commissioners on Tuesday approved two amendments to the county’s comprehensive plan for property near Whitworth University, one of which has been somewhat controversial among neighbors. Developer Harley Douglass proposed a zoning change from low- to medium-density residential for more than 22 acres of vacant land northwest of Five Mile and Waikiki roads, with subsequent plans to build more than 300 apartments, according to an environmental study submitted to the county.

Spokane Valley card room wants lower taxes to compete with rates paid in Spokane

Spokane Valley reduced its gambling tax rate from 10 percent to 6 percent three years ago to help businesses like the Black Pearl Casino and Poker Room remain competitive with card rooms in Spokane that pay less in taxes. Now Ian Riley, owner of the Black Pearl, is asking Spokane Valley City Council to lower the city’s gambling tax even further.

Saltese Flats wetlands project underway for wildlife, water

Spokane County has started construction on the Saltese Flats wetland restoration project that will provide educational and recreational opportunities for residents. The restoration project, located west of the Saltese Uplands Conservation Area, will include multiuse trails, a bird habitat, viewing areas and a interpretive center with an auditorium, classrooms and meeting areas.
